Odeletta
"Why are you crying?" Gwen asks, tucking loose strands of her blonde hair behind her ear.
I shake my head, stuffing a scoop of ice cream in my mouth.
"She had room on that door, Gwen!" I sob, swallow my mouthful of ice cream.
"What are you talking about?" Gwen asks.
"Shhhhh!" I put a finger up.
"Jack! Jack, wake up!" Rose shakes his shoulder.
"He has ice crystals in his hair!" I sob, putting my left hand over my mouth and my right over my heart, sobbing, hard. "She could have taken turns!" I cry. "She has space on that door! She could've fit Jack! And a small child!"
"Oh for goodness sakes!" Gwen says, snatching the remote from me. She shuts the TV off. I stand up.
"Gwen!" I sob. "Why did you do that?"
"You are depressed, Odeletta. I know because I've pulled you out of it. What's the matter?"
I wipe my tears, huffing.
"You shut off the Titanic. That is what the matter is."
I violently throw my body back onto the couch, crossing my arms over my chest, pouting.
She sits down on the coffee table.
"You miss Nathan." She says.
I look away from her.
"Wanna talk about it?" She asks.
I let out a slow breath.
"Every time I think of him, my heart hurts." I mumble, looking away from her. "I can see him so clearly, as though he's right in front of me. I can see his grin. I can feel his strong arms wrapping around me. I can feel his bicep under my head. I can feel my leg thrown across his. I can hear his heartbeat, feel his chest rise and fall, and if I listen hard enough I can hear his lungs as he breathes strongly, steadily. I can hear his laugh and his voice. I can see him laughing, feel the vibrations of his chest as he does so. I can see his eyebrows knitted in confusion. I can feel his lips against mine, his hands in mine. They're bigger than mine and they virtually swallow mine but somehow they fit. I can see his brown eyes shining, I can hear his singing voice. I can see him walking in the house from work. I can hear him shouting from the bedroom for Harper to keep it down in the morning. I miss him, Gwen. I miss him so much."
"He will be home soon." She says softly.
"No." I say. "There's not a set date. He could show up a week from now or two months from now. It depends on when everyone gets jobs. Anna still can't find one and neither can Harper. On top of that, they haven't started looking for a place."
"Unless they're surprising you." Gwen says.
"Don't give me false hope." I say. "Now give me the remote so I can rewind the movie."
She sighs, handing it to me.
The doorbell rings as I turn the TV back on.
She watches me pull the blanket back over my body and curl back up on the couch and signs audibly.
"I'll get it." She grumbles, walking out of the living room.
Good, it's not like I'm getting up any time soon.
I rewind my movie and watch the last few minutes.
When the credits roll up, I shut it off and pull out my phone.
