The week passed, a blur which didn't seem to have much of a purpose. I found myself dozing off in classes into dreams of that day and that dance with Ezra. He and Kane were yet to turn up. I couldn't help but feel worried for Kane. That feeling of knowing him for a long time had kicked in once again. Jack or Sasha would wake me up, and give me a worried look.
Jack still wouldn't answer my questioning of him. It was getting frustrating, but talking to him seemed to relieve me of all my stress. I sighed slowly, watching him write down more spells from the text book and explaining them in depth to me. I would give him a melancholy smile and keep on working.
As for Ben, I saw him with a girl on Wednesday and wasn't at all surprised. After Senoida had talked to me, I had gotten the message. He was a womanizer, and I couldn't let him get to me. Marlow was less forgiving though. In the hall on the way to class, Ben walked up to her and completely ignored me. She smiled, flirted a little, then when he offered to show her a good time in the flying tower, she giggled.
"Wait one moment Ben," she smiled, reaching into her satchel and pulling out one of the ingredients for chemistry. Thickened fig juice. At the smell, I felt my stomach somersault. She turned to me with the same alluring smile.
"Can I use some of your ingredients for class?" she asked. I nodded, not knowing what she was getting at. I did, though, when she took the fig juice and poured it all over Ben's bouncy blonde hair. He stormed off in search of the nearest toilet with every girl laughing at him. I high-fived Marlow, knowing I had found a friend in her.
On Friday night, after another gruelling session of Exchange with Professor Lancaster, I fell straight to sleep. I awoke at 12 in the night and couldn't get back to sleep. As I lay in bed, thinking about my week so far, I saw a flicker of light outside. I walked over to the low window and knelt to the cold wooden floor. I opened the window and looked out into the cold night sky. On the far tower, the flight one, I saw something.
It looked like an angel, yet it was the colour of black, a pitch and unfathomable black. It glanced over at me, before launching back into the sky. I walked back to my bed, and fell back asleep. The next day I wondered if it had only be a dream, but the still open window told me otherwise.
"Did you see anyone who opened that window?" I asked Sasha, sorting through my wardrobe to put something on. I decided on a loose white singlet and light denim jeans.
"Maybe it was the ghost of Fortis!" cried the girl with the ever changing hair who I now knew was Marlina Maycot.
"What's the ghost of Fortis?" I asked. Marlina grinned, motioning for another girl to come over. It was Katrina State, a gothic looking girl with one of the best wardrobes I'd ever seen. She grinned, her black lipstick covered mouth contrasting against her pearly white teeth.
"There's a rumour," she started, "that the ghost of one of the Professor's children walks the walls. Apparently she died, but they actually bought her here. But no one could see her, because only those who were pure of spirit could see her. She walks the halls, never being seen or heard. Sometimes she tries to communicate when something bad is about to happen.
"She got her name because she mainly was seen by Fortis students. Fortis is also a house for the pure hearted. Atra Pectum have cold hearts, Prudentia have self importance because of their smartness and Pulchritudo are conceited by their beauty."
