Chapter 46

Jake

I woke up feeling like I've just been on a week's drinking bender with the guys. My head killed and I woke up in a bed that wasn't my own. I couldn't open my eyes, the room was too bright. There was a ringing noise that was passing through my head and my throat felt dryer than sandpaper. It felt as though the fire was being fried down my throat every time I swallowed.

I heard a door opening and closing. Footsteps were coming towards me as I forced myself to open my eyes. I groaned as I took in the white walls around me. I saw a doctor standing at the end of the bed reading whatever was on his clip broad. I let my eyes adjust to the room before pushing myself up from the bed.

My moans caused the Doctor to turn his head up to see me. He smiled at me as he walked around to help me sit up straight. He was an older man, in his late fifties no doubt. He looked like he knows what he's doing as he takes out an x-ray scan and looks at it making notes.

I felt no real pain, just a dead weight feeling in my mussels. Like when you get pins and needles in your arm or leg and it goes dead after, I had that feeling all over my body.

"You're a lucky man Mr Minster" the Doctor grinned at me. I looked up to see him but was blinded by the light again.

"What happened?" I ask groaning.

"Significant pressure was made to the right side of your brain causing you to lose consciousness during a game," he tells me but I just give him a confused look. This happened during the game? What was wrong with my brain?

"I don't remember..." I told him.

"That's quite normal to have moments of forgetfulness during the impact," the Doctor said as he shined a torch into my eyes. Great more light, just what I need. "You'll have a large headache for a few days but your test came back all fine. Any dizziness or blurred vision?" he asked looking back over the scan before giving himself a little nod.

"Not just the head that kills," I tell him as I moved to rub the back of my head when I felt a band-aid wrapped around a large bump on the top.

"The impact caused an open head injury but you're going to be fine. I'll proscribe you some pain relief and I'm afraid to say you won't be able to train for another few weeks and you'll need another medical before you go back to playing" he told me. You can't really argue with a Doctor so I just nodded in agreement.

I didn't really want to sit here anymore splitting hairs about when I could play again. I just wanted to go home. As I thought of home I looked around where I was a saw all the cars and balloons that said get well soon. What the hell! How long...

"How long have I been here?" I asked as I took in the room. The Doctor looked around as well and laughed.

"Only two days. You've been a popular guy I must say. The pain relief we dozed you on was high due to your weight and height. Most of the time here you've just been sleeping but when you came in first you were in pretty bad shape. We feared you may have suffered from internal bleeding but all tests show you're fine and ready to go home" as he said the words I felt my heart relax in my chest. Home! Thank God. I smile at him as I move to get up and out of the bed but too fast making me feel dizzy again. I sat back down on the bed, as the Doc made his way back over to me. "Just take it easy, you took a hard hit. I've signed your medical so you're free to leave whenever you are ready. The front desk will write you a pharmacy prescription to help the pain. Drink lots of fluids and no training... or alcohol" he grinned at me. He clearly knew who I was.

"Thanks, Doctor," I say as he makes his way out of the room.

I sat there for a moment, taking everything in. I couldn't remember what happened; I've been hit to the ground many times. What happened this time to make me land here?
