Dear Patricia,
I am going into the battlefields soon and I wanted to write you a letter. Everything is fine. But I want you to know that I will probably die soon... I have made lots of new friends in the army and it's not a bad place. It's just sometimes worries can overcome me and I remember I have to keep on fighting. Not for the army but for you. So I can return home and see you again. I miss you a lot but I have befriended a Corporal from the RAF. Now I have a friend. I wanted to assue that I am not alone but with good friends like that Corporal. However, the General is still very strict and mean. Infact, just the other day he demoted good old Sergeant Young. You know that Sergeant who spent half his life trying to be a Sergeant. Now all his work has gone because of that General. But I want you to know that even though I have got lots of new friends I'm doing this for you. If I die you can forget me. Go find a new husband. However, if I go to heaven I will never ever forget you.
I hope that you do not forget me,
Charlie Stephenson
And with that I put down my pen and picked up the letter. I walked quite quickly to the box where we put the letters. I inserted it into the rectangular hole. Today has been an emotional day. I just want to go to sleep...
