ღthe feelings never toldღ
I wonder what the first person who talked said. Did they say something spectacular? Memorable? Or did they utter something so profoundly unexceptional that it wasn't even worth noting? I know if it was Finn, it would be remembered for eternity. His words spill from his lips like honey, warm and golden. You'll never want him to stop. Finn started talking as soon as I gave the indication I was awake, despite the fact my eyes were closed.
"....To me, horror movies these days are AWFUL. They're either super corny, super slow, or terribly edited. The industry really needs to up their game man."
I smirk and sit up slowly, willing the ache in my body to go away as I yawn.
"Morning Mills," he says with a lopsided grin.
His hair is messy, and sticking straight up in the back. It's one hundred percent adorable.
"Morning Finnie. Sleep well?"
Finn lets out a little wheeze and stretches his lanky arms.
"I guess."Standing up nimbly, I pick my way to him with trembling steps and trap him in a hug. I breathe in deeply and take in everything Finn. He smells like pine trees and vanilla. He nuzzles his chin into my hair and kisses my head softly.
"I want to remember this....you, us...everything....I want to remember this moment," I mumble into his hospital gown. Finn's hands are cold on my shoulder blades, but it doesn't bother me.
"I want you to remember this t-"
Finn gets cut off by a timid knocking on the door.
"C-come in!" I stammer while stepping away and smoothing my sweatshirt.
The knob turns and the door swings open, revealing Nurse Tessa and a cart piled with bed-sheets and comforters.
"Hey Millie, I forgot to tell you but I'm here to clean up.""Oh, um, that's nice," I reply while sitting on the edge of my mattress. "Thank you..?"
A quick inspection of the room is enough to tell me it's not dirty, and she doesn't appear to have any cleaning supplies. This is really, really weird. Nurse Tessa nods curtly and walks to Finn's side of the room. She begins to strip his bed of its sheets and fluff out the pillows while he watches from a metal chair. Finn appears, I don't know, maybe forlorn? I can't think of why, she's just changing his sheets....right? But then, she's not. She's grabbing his suitcase and boxes of belongings, including his beloved book, The Fault In Our Stars, and that's when I know something's wrong.
"W..why are you doing that?" I ask, my voice wavering.
Nurse Tessa and Finn both look at me, wearing the same dreary expression.
"I thought you knew.." Nurse Tessa whispers.
"Knew what?" My British accent cracks, the worry spilling out.
Nurse Tessa's eyes get glossy and she looks away. I glance at Finn, but he's busy messing with his air-tank.
"We're getting a new patient in here Millie..."
"What? No! I like Finn being my roommate."
At that Nurse Tessa's face falls even further and she drops the belongings in her arms. The clatter makes me flinch. She approaches slowly and takes my hands in hers. Nurse Tessa's shaking immensely, and I now know I'm getting terrible, terrible news.
