ღif you love me, let me goღ
"Little faster now Millie," Shannon instructs from across the pool.
Nodding, the smile that's been plastered on my face since yesterday grows a tad bit wider. Using mainly my arms with some slight (and painful) kicks, I cut through the water. Even though I've only been to two of these physical therapy sessions, I can already feel my muscles getting stronger. "Good job!" Shannon applauds when I reach her.
I give her my best smile and sink down until my head bobs above the surface. Suddenly, a loud ringing reverberates throughout the room, and it takes me a minute to figure out where it's coming from. Huh, that's weird. I don't ever remember there being a phone in here. When I look back towards my instructor, Shannon is already out of the pool and at the telephone, pulling it off the base. "Hello?" She says into the microphone.
As she listens to the person on the phone, her face goes pale.
"Okay..I'll get her back right away." Shannon puts the phone back and dashes across the room to my wheelchair, then walks it back over to the wheelchair assist. Making my way over, I shiver lightly and wrap my arms around myself.
"Is..is everything alright?" I ask through chattering teeth.
"Millie," she begins, shaking her head pitifully.
"Finn...he's being taken to the ER."
My heart feels like it's being squeezed, crushed, demolished. A meek "what" is all that escapes my blue lips as I'm raised from the pool and lifted into my wheelchair. Shannon wraps a cream colored towel around my bare shoulders and navigates us quickly through the halls. "What happened to him? Is he gonna be okay?"
"His lungs started to fail a minute ago, I don't know..."
We round a corner and come face to face with two double doors flying open. Hospital personnel frantically rush towards us and I catch a glimpse of the patient. Finn. My pulse picks up and out of instinct I reach my hand out for his. I can see his chest heaving frantically and imagine his lungs gasping and searching for air, but I force myself to stop. Even though he's struggling against his body, he catches my eye and grasps my hand tightly, pumping it twice. It's like he's telling me to be okay....but what if it won't? Too soon, his soft hand gets wretched from mine. I throw my head over my shoulder and watch the swarm of people rush my Finn away to the ER, where they will do their best to save them. Through my daze I can vaguely hear Shannon say:
"I promise everything will turn out right."
This hospital and its promises.
