ღthings have changed for meღ
After two hours of catching up, there's a subtle knock at the door.
"Millie, you cannot talk to me while they're here, okay?"
"Wait, what? Why?"
Finn raises a finger to his lips in reply as a strange boy steps inside the room.
"Hey, I'm Romeo, I'll be bringing you your meals for a bit while Nurse Tessa attends to the other patients."
Romeo smiles at me, and I can't help but noticing one of his front teeth is shorter than the other. It's really funny, which makes me let out a little giggle. Finn frowns and I immediately stop.
"Oh um, thanks. You can set the trays down on our nightstands."
"There's suppose to be multiple trays? They didn't tell me. Lemme go check on that."
Romeo closes the door carefully, and I can hear his footfalls on the other side. "You didn't have to do that," Finn says while examining his nails.
"Do what?"
"Say he lost a tray. I forgot to tell you, but they gave me this medicine while I was in the ER so I won't be hungry for awhile."
"Ah.." I reply as I grab a mini pretzel off the plate. I eat in silence for a moment, letting the quiet linger and fill the room.
"Hey, Finn."
"Yeah?"
"Why don't you ever talk about your parents?"
I cringe a little and look back at my plate. I can't believe I actually let that spring out of my mouth so candidly. I wouldn't appreciate it if people did that to me.
"My mom...she doesn't visit because she said she can't see me in this state, that it's too much for her-"
"seriously? That's screwed up."
"Millie, Millie, it's okay, I'm use to it."
My hand begins to ache, and I realize I've been balling my fists.
"But it's not okay Finn.. You don't deserve to be treated like that."
"I guess...."
Shaking my head, I run my fingers through my hair to calm myself down.
"What about your dad?"
Finn scoffs.
"What about him?"
"Why doesn't he visit you?"
"That's an excellent question, and I wish I knew the answer to it. He remarried right before they discovered my cancer and I haven't heard from him since."
"Oh.."
We're interrupted by a knock on the door, and Romeo sticking his head in. Why must me and Finn always get interrupted?
"Hey, so about the other tray-"
"it's fine, it got sorted out," I say, cutting him off.
Romeo nods curtly and begins to leave, but apparently thinks better than to. "Um..I'm not really suppose to do this, but..would you like some company?"
Finn snorts and rolls his eyes, motioning at himself dramatically.
"What am I, chopped liver?"
Romeo ignores him, and looks at me hopefully. No offense to him, he's alright I guess, but he seems pretty stuck up (if that makes sense). Waving in Finn's general direction, I say: "I have all the company I need, but thanks."
Romeo looks at Finn and scowls. "A..alright," he stammers.
I nod at him as he exits, then look back to Finn.
"I think somebody likes you," Finn teases in a sing-song voice.
"Does not!"
"Does too!"
Reaching behind me, I grab a pillow and chuck it at him.
"Ooo, you play dirty. I like it."
He winks and tosses it back at me. I catch it mid air and stand up shakily, hitting the side of his head with it, but the only effect is has is making his curls bounce. He sits there blinking, then smiles widely.
"Go on, hit me some more! I'll take it like a man."
Resting my hand on his cheek, I lean closer until my lips are level with his ear. "Awe, but Finnie, it's no fun that way." Before I can even straighten myself, I feel a pillow hit my torso.
"Challenge accepted!" Finn laughs, his cheeks a dark crimson.
So we do that for an hour, playfully shrieking and bashing each-other with the worn out hospital pillows. Somehow, we end up on the ground side-by-side, panting and staring up at the cracked ceiling.
"You know what I wish?" Finn asks with a sort of reverence.
"What?"
I turn onto my side and stare at him.
"I wish I could take you on a date. A real one with those roses you love so dearly. One where we'd both wear fancily foreign clothing and eat overly-expensive food. Where I could get to walk you up to your front door and....kiss you goodnight." Finn's voice cracks as he says the last part, and it completely makes my heart melt.
"Well, I know it's not the same, but maybe..maybe you could kiss me right now..?"
"Ya know, maybe I could," he smirks. Have you ever had a moment that you know for a fact you'll remember as long as you live? I can tell this is about to be one of them. With Finn leaning closer and smiling, with his bangs covering one eye and me brushing them out of his face. I slide closer and giggle, because just the nearness of him makes my heart flutter excitedly. Finn dips his head and kisses my cheek. I groan.
"What?" He jokes playfully.
"You missed!" I huff with exasperation.
"Hmm?"
"I said," I say while pulling him closer, our knees bumping together.
"You missed."
Mustering up all my courage, I press my lips against Finn's without giving my brain a reason not to. His hand cups my cheek gently and I grin. He pulls away with a smile.
"Was that what you thought of when you imagined the end of our date?"
"Yeah, I was definitely thinking something like that."
