Party woke up before Siren did. Unlike the other nights, when they slept as far away from each other as was possible on the small bed, Party's chest was against Siren's back.
She was facing away from him, so he couldnt quite see her face. He propped himself up on one elbow and leaned down towards her. He pushed some strands of her corkscrew curls away from her face, and she stirred.
Her eyes fluttered open and gazed up at him. He smiled at her, and to his dismay she stuffed her face in her pillow and groaned. What did he do wrong? They didnt even do anything last night. He didnt even kiss her! He was about to ask when he got an answer.
"Stop being so goddamn cute Party. I think its affecting my health."
He grinned and nuzzled his face into her hair. They stayed like that for a while. Siren was the first to break the silence.
"Hey Party?" She rolled over to look at him. She was close enough that Party wondered if he should get their first kiss over with already. He was acting like a ten year old boy.
Instead though he just muttered a response.
"Whats your real name?"
"Huh?" Uh oh. What if you trusted her too fast. What if this all was some big scheme to take the Fabulous Four down? And he totally fell for it.
Siren seemed to sense his tension, so she quickly said, "You dont have to tell me. I just think its funny that in the Killjoy society, no one really knows each others names. And sometimes its funny to try to guess their names based on their attributes, ya know?"
Party did not know, but he nodded his head anyway.
"Like you probably have some really tough, leader-ish name. Something like Alexander." She said.
"Actually, my name is Eugene."
"What?! You're joking!"
He laughed. "Yeah I am, its Gerard."
"Thats not much better," she giggled.
"Hey!"
He grabbed her and poked her repeatedly in the stomach, to which she squealed.
Somehow he ended up in a slightly upward position, with her back leaning on his chest. He played with her hair.
"What's your name?"
"Alisa."
"How do you spell it?"
"A-L-I-S-A. My teachers always had the hardest time pronouncing it for some reason. I eventually started introducing myself by 'Hi! Im Alisa! Its like Mona Lisa but without the 'Mon'."
At that they both burst out into fits of giggles.
"Why did you pick the name Nuclear Siren?" Party inquired.
Siren shrugged. "Nuclear just because it sounded badass. And Siren after the sea nymphs in Greek mythology who were known for their singing."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, why?"
"I thought you picked Siren because you are so loud and obnoxious."
Siren gasped and Party grinned even more. They began playfully arguing about the meaning of her Killjoy name.
They were silenced when a knock rapped the door.
"Yes?" Party asked.
Jet's muffled voice came from behind the wooden door. "Dr. Death wants to meet with us. He is gonna be here in an hour."
"Okay. Thanks for the heads up."
He heard Jet's feet trudge away.
He just met with Dr. Death earlier that week, even if it was an unorthodox meeting. He didnt just make drop-ins that regularly. Something must be going on.
Siren must have noticed the worried expression in his face, because she stroked his cheek.
"Hey. Im sure everything is fine." Her brown eyes held his, and he squeezed her hand.
"I hope so."
