"Nagisa, I'm off to trade. You know the drill." My mother throws her hood up, loading up pockets on the horses saddle.

"Be safe." I hand her the last of her creations and take a step back, checking the bridle isn't hurting Philippe. He nuzzles his nose closer to me. "You too." I pet the white hair on his face and watch my mother swing on him gently.

"I should be back for dinner tomorrow. Please get supper ready and tidy up a bit. I know that Gakushū fellow wants to come over." Mother grabs the reins, adjusting her stirrups. Right. She wants me to marry the 'handsome man' as if he's going to treat me nicely.

"Of course, Mother." I wave her off as she clicks at Philippe. I hurry back inside once they are out of earshot.

"Shiota~ My princess!" Anything but this guy. I knew he'd just wait for her to leave. I grab the latches for the doors, locking as many of them as quickly as possible. I can't risk letting him in the house again.

"You're trying to lock me out? How rude. I thought we were friends." I snap towards his voice. Why must mother always open windows? He takes a few steps towards me, I take a few back, he reaches for me, I sidestep it. He isn't going to leave until he gets me and I don't want him ruining the whole house. Dammit. I stop moving away from him and brace myself. "Heeey, why'd you stop running?" He holds my waist. I move my face away as he pulls me closer. "I thought we were playing a game." His eyes light up with anger, though his happy expression remains. He's just scaring me now. He knows I don't like him. I don't even want to let him treat me like this but- "Be nice. Remember, I'm the only one who knows your secret and still wants you around."

"So that's it. You want to marry me because I'm a boy." Not only is he threatening me, he's a fucking ass.

"Your mother and the rest of the village don't seem to know that. You're also a very good cook. I couldn't be more happy if you decided to cook like that for me everyday." He puts on a soft smile, kissing my hand. I pull it away.

"I cook because I don't want to go hungry." I spit, walking away quickly. Shit. I made him mad.

"I'm trying to help you. I know how your mother is. I know how the village is. You're weird. Extremely weird. I'm going to protect you, despite all of that." He's trying to act sincere, now? He follows me into the kitchen.

"I'm perfectly fine on my own. I don't need protection."

"But don't you want it? You want to feel safe, right? Everyone does." He traces a thin finger down my arm, stopping at my hand to grab it. "I can make you feel safe." I need to get him out.

"Well, yes. I'd love to feel safe." I bite my lip as I look away, backing towards the door. He takes the bait and follows. "But... well you know how I feel about boys. I can't let anybody else find out." My back hits my door and I quietly undo the locks behind me.

"You know I'd never tell. I promise I'll protect you." He takes a step too close, leaving little to no room between us as he puts a hand on my face. I smile through it and grab the handle.

"That's very nice of you but..." I turn my head away.

"But?" He leans into me, probably hoping for a kiss. If he wants a kiss he can kiss my ass!

"I still have housework to do!" I open the door, letting him fall out and trip down the porch steps, landing with every trace of pride gone. I latch the doors back up and check the windows, locking them all down and running to my room. He hits the door until the hinge rattles, probably denting the outside.

"Open this door, Nagisa! I said I'd protect you and you didn't even listen!" He shouts through the wood. If I reply at all he'll probably bust in. I'm just going to sneak out back.
