------------------------

I had decided to meet Alex and Sasha there. I had thrown on an old yellow sundress with a bathing suit I had picked up along the way. I was too tired to do anything about my hair, leaving it down. I remembered to stuff in the camera before leaving. I wanted to leave early before Rick woke up. He hasn't woken up since I came home yesterday. Must have been drinking a lot. I was dreading the moment I had to come home.

I didn't want them coming to pick me up like they had suggested. Letting them see where I lived, or worse, Rick would be a nightmare. The salty fresh air was relaxing like Alex promised. I couldn't help shake off the knotted feeling in my stomach. Last time I had been at the beach, I was waiting for mum. It was after school, I was about eleven.

She told me we were going to hang out and said she would meet me at the beach with a lunch surprise. I waited for 5 hours before realizing she wasn't coming. I walked home and found her sitting on the floor smoking weed, high out of her mind. I screamed at her, asking for an apology. Instead, she laughed and asked if I wanted to join her. I was sickened. It was one of the many horrific memories I had of her.

"Hey, Riley you made it!" A familiar voice celebrated. I turned around, quickly wiping away any stray tears I had.

I put on a quick smile and waved kindly her way.

"Hi Sasha!," I yelled back making my way towards her. She suddenly pulled me into a friendly hug, I gasped at the sudden contact and started to feel really uncomfortable. I pulled away gently but forcefully taking a step back.

"Woah, do you smoke or something?" She asked fanning herself.

Shit, the shower last night hadn't been enough to scrub away the smell entirely.

"Dad does."' I said, the word "dad" made me squirmy and my tongue felt bitter and dry. I had to say it, can't raise any suspicion.

She nodded and smiled excitedly.

"Oh, right. Well, we're all over there, they others are playing a game of Volleyball."

She pointed to the loud group I had come to familiarity with yesterday. I smiled, the feeling of excitement overpowering my fear I had before.

"Cool," I said simply before jogging after her.

They were so loud!

"Hah! My ball! I told you I win this round. You stupid mongrels!" Alex chanted jumping in the air.

I couldn't help but stare in awe. His tanned chest was bare and toned, his lean muscles and defined abs definitely did him justice. He looked like a stupidly good-looking Calvin Klein model.

I watched Katie and Max who had played the other team, as they rolled their eyes.

"Dude, we haven't started yet, we were just passing you the ball so you could start the game," Max said chuckling.

Katie laughed. "Idiot"

I sat down next to Sasha who had laid out several towels along the sand. I took off my leather jacket that I wore absolutely everywhere. It was old and weathered but it held lot's of memories with me and dad.

I lay down breathing a sigh of sweet relief, the sun soothing my face, I smiled into the light.

"This is the life," Sasha said calmly, resting her head next to mine, flicking on her shades.
