"Are you okay?" you asked Mary-Anne as you untied the ropes that were binding her arms and legs together. "Did he force you to drink anything?"

The girl shook her head,  causing her tawny haired locks to bounce around.

"Not yet," she wore a relieved expression on her face. "He was about to though- he said he'd give me something and went to his laboratory just before the two of you arrived."

"And where would that laboratory happen to be?"

"Further along this hallway- I spotted a room filled with bottles and colourful pills before he locked me up here." Mary-Anne answered the Earl matter-of-factly.

"I see." The dark haired male spoke aloud,  but it seemed like he was talking more to himself than to the other people in the room. "I'll try to check out the laboratory."

"No,  not with you [Y/n]," Ciel addressed you when you moved towards the direction he was. "We still aren't sure if the poisoner is still in that room or not. You should stay here with Mary-Anne until I get back."

You were about to protest but the Earl had already gone out,  closing the wooden door behind him.

You sank down next to your maid and found yourself trying to decide the best course of action to take once again. If you stayed here, you could keep a close eye in Mary-Anne and her safety, but then again, what if something happened to Ciel?

Even though you haven't known the Earl for long, the mere idea of losing him was unbearable for you.

You sat quietly, feeling small in the cramped room as you hugged the battered suitcase to your chest like you always did when you felt low.

"Dad!" you ran through the garden excitedly and jumped up to hug the
(h/c)  haired male that towered over you.  "You're back!"

"Yup." your father gave you his signature smile. "I'm back."

Your father had to go on trips often when you were younger,  to extract a certain memory or just obeying the Queen's wishes.

"I brought you a gift too." the tall figure crouched down to your height and produced a vial out of his tattered suitcase.

A million tiny, glowing orbs flew out when he pulled off the lid.

Your looked at them, awestruck- they all looked so beautiful, emitting their bright,  luminous glow as they flew around gracefully.

"Fireflies." your father spoke in his warm,  comforting voice. "I thought of you when I extracted this memory."

"Of me?" you tilted your small,  round head to the side,  not comprehending his words. "How come?"

In your mind,  these whimsical creatures had come from a different,  more beautiful world than yours.

"You're always bright and cheerful,  no matter what happens," he smiled and looking back,  you realised that his eyes were filled to the brim with sadness and happiness at the same time. "Please promise me you'll never stop glowing."

"Okay! " the younger you had not noticed the look in his eyes,  much too excited at the prospect of being able to glow like the beautiful creatures that were flying around. "I promise!"

You fiddled nervously with a vial as you waited around in the hallway,
Mary-Anne looking on worriedly a distance away.

It was 5 years since the incident with the fireflies and your father had already taught you the ropes of memory weaving during that time. Using what he and taught you about the art,  you'd managed to find a memory with fireflies and were planning to give it to your father as a gift when he came home.

He'd promised that he would be back in time for your twelfth birthday,  but that was still two weeks away. Maybe he'd be coming later?

You were about to walk back to your room when there was a knock on the door.

You rushed to answer it,  Mary-Anne following flusteredly.

Roger had already reached the door before the two of you and you looked through the open door to see a grim looking man carrying a tattered suitcase.

Your father's suitcase.

The man cleared his throat nervously,

"I'm afraid there was an accident with a carriage."  he informed in his official voice. "We couldn't find the body of your father nor the driver, but it would've been impossible to survive such a crash."

"We managed to find this suitcase," the man said monotonously and handed you the brown case. "We thought you might've liked to have it."

Your body moved as if in a dream and you sank down onto the ground when he handed you the suitcase.

The man walked away hurriedly,  not wishing to witness what followed.

For the first time,  Roger closed the door quietly without a snide remark and Mary-Anne excused herself along with him.

You sat silently,  hugging the suitcase to your chest, not wanting to let the only thing your father had left behind out of your grasp.

Sitting there alone,  you promised yourself that you would never let anyone important to you be taken away again.

Not if you could do anything about it.

You'd made up your mind and lifted yourself up when you remembered the other person in the small room.

You looked back at the tawny haired girl who had been sitting noiselessly while you were making your decision.

"Dont worry, " your maid gave you her signature reassuring smile.  "I'll be fine waiting here."

Once again,  you experienced an immense feeling of greatfulness towards the kind girl that had accompanied you for so long.

"Thank you" you hugged the tawny haired girl appreciatively before exiting the room in search of Ciel.
