*Maddie's POV*
I was excited but very nervous to go out with Ansel, because I wanted everything to go perfectly.
I get out of bed and take a quick shower, and by the time I get out it was already 11 am, which gave me an hour to get ready and be at the Westside Cafe.
I decided to wear a fairly plain outfit, a tribal patterned shirt with dark jeans and my black converse.
I leave my hair down in its waves and bring a fringe over the shoulder purse to keep my phone in.
I tried a little bit more with my makeup today, putting natural shades of eyeshadow on with my mascara.
Once I was sure I was ready, I left my room and walked out Into the living room where my aunt was sitting on the couch, reading the newspaper.
She looked up at me when I walked out, her eyes going wide when she saw me. My makeup wasn't over the top, but I never wore anything more than mascara.
"Where are you going all gussied up?" She asks, setting down the newspaper to focus her full attention on me.
"Ansel wants me to meet him at the Westside Cafe, will you take me?"
She studies me for a few seconds before nodding, standing up to go get her purse and keys.
Once were in the car and driving towards the cafe, she speaks to me when we're nearly there.
"Well I never thought I would be doing this anytime soon. Driving you to a date with a boy"
"It's not a date, we're just friends" I say as we pull up outside the cafe.
"Whatever you say, Mads. Goodbye, have fun!" She exclaims, leaning over to place a kiss on my cheek.
I grab my bag and put it over my shoulder as I open the door and exit the car, making my way towards the entrance of the cafe.
As soon as I enter, I see Ansel sitting alone at a table by the window of the cafe, and I immediately make my way over to him.
I sit on the opposite side of the table and look up at him as he flashes me that gorgeous smile.
"Hey, Maddie, how are you?" He asks, his eyes scanning the upper half of my body that showed over the table.
"I'm good, how are you?" I ask, grabbing one of the menus that were sitting on the table.
"I'm well, thank you. You look beautiful" He says, grabbing the other menu resting on the table.
I was only in jeans and a tank top, nothing special, but I thanked him anyway.
After our waitress comes and takes our orders, Ansel takes the opportunity to start with the get to knowing.
He sits up in his seat and locks his eyes with mine as he says everything about himself that comes to mind.
"I'm Ansel Elgort, I'm 20 years old and I grew up right here in Manhattan, New York City. I'm an actor mainly but I also DJ under the name Ansolo. I used to dance as well. My father Arthur and sister Sophie are photographers, my mother Grethe is a opera director, and my brother Warren is a film editor." He says, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Alright, that's all the technical stuff, but what about the regular stuff?" I ask as the waitress brings us our food.
"And what do you mean by 'regular stuff,' Madeline?" He asks, a smile pulling at his lips as he starts picking at his food the same time I do.
I've realized he enjoys calling me Madeline to annoy me.
"Like what's your favorite color, food, activity?" I ask, keeping eye contact with him as we eat.
"Favorite color is green, favorite food is cookie cake, favorite activity other than acting or making music would be rock climbing or basketball." He begins, "Now enough about me, I want to know about you"
"Well my name is Madeline Lawrence, I'm 18 years old and grew up in LA with my parents, but moved here with my aunt when they died. My mother was a dancer and my father was an engineer, but mostly just tagged along with my mother wherever she danced. I'm an only child. I spend most of my time in my bedroom reading." I say, focusing my gaze down on my plate.
"Oh come on, a pretty girl like you has to have tons of friends" He says like it's obvious, taking a sip of the water next to his plate.
"Not really. I had a few friends at my dance studio but when I stopped dancing, we stopped talking."
"Well now you've got a friend, and I'm not going anywhere" He says with a smile, "What about you, favorite food, color, and activity?"
"Dark chocolate, blue, and dancing or reading."
He nods, and after a few more minutes we both finish the food on our plates.
The waitress comes with the check, and I reach into my bag to get money, only to be interrupted by Ansel's insisting voice.
"Oh I don't think so, Miss Madeline, whenever you're with me you won't pay for a thing." He says, pulling out money and putting it in the black pouch, setting it on the end of the table for the waitress.
Once everything is paid for, Ansel stood and walked over to me, leading me out of the cafe.
We were walking back to his car when all of a sudden I see a flash of light coming from a bush in front of a building a few feet away.
Ansel puts a pair of sunglasses on to hide his face and I pull mine out of my bag to put them on.
Multiple more flashes come, and it was the paparazzi taking pictures of us. I had never had to deal with this before, and it made me feel slightly uncomfortable.
Ansel must have noticed, because I feel his arm wrap around my waist and he pulls me close to his side, leaning down to whisper something in my ear.
"I'm sorry for them, they won't leave me alone"
I nod slightly and after a while we reach his car, and he opens the passenger's door for me to get in before returning to the driver's side.
The flash of the cameras continue as I tell him my address and we pull away, but stop when we start driving towards my aunt's apartment.
Once we arrive there, he turns to look at me, taking his sunglasses off the same time I do so we can make eye contact.
"It was lovely to be with you, Madeline, and I hope we can see each other again soon." He says with a smile, leaning over towards me.
I was nervous he was going to kiss me until he tilted his head up, placing a quick kiss to my forehead.
Even such a little sign of affection sent tingles up me spine and I reach for the door handle.
"I'll see you soon, Ansel, goodbye" I say, opening the door and walking up towards my apartment.
