Chapter Seventeen: I'll Tell You My Secret

(Gavin)

"I'm here to see my brother Jayden Kohl." I say waiting to be given approval to see him, get answers I need.

She gives me a wary look, perplexed I would bother to walk through the doors again. Wondering what's wrong with me to willingly step foot inside this place and want to talk to someone everyone thinks belongs here. 

"I'm sorry he isn't seeing any visitors today." she says looking up from the computer screen.

"I was told I could see him today." I know I called. I set up this visit and made sure I repeated back the date and time. "The woman on the phone said to be here at ten."

I glance at the clock on the wall behind her, I'm fifteen minutes early. I intentionally walked in now to stop myself from talking myself out of it.

I need to talk to him. I need to hear what he has to say about what I found out.

"Oh," she says looking over something I can't see. "You mean Dr. Shelby?"

She glances up waiting for an answer, "Yeah, I think so." I reply vaguely remembering the short conversation. I had called last week in the morning and asked about visiting Jayden. I was put on hold right away as I was transferred to someone else, her. "She told me I could visit and talk to him today."

"No," she shakes her head, "She has it down as a-"

"You must be Gavin right?" a woman behind me interrupts our conversation.

I turn around to see her standing behind me with a warm smile and I quickly realize this has to be Dr. Shelby. She's younger than the other doctor I spoke with my last two visits but she seems just as determined to ask me questions.

She wants to talk to me just like I talked with Dr. Chamberlain. Ask me questions and why I'm here once again. "Let's go to a private room and talk." she leads the way down the hallway and I know talking to Jayden is becoming less of a real possibility.

I stay frozen in place considering my options. I can walk out, leave before I'm trapped and faced with whatever she wants to discuss or I can follow her down the hall. I can do as she says with a small hope I can manage to convince her seeing Jayden, talking to him today, is something I need to do.

I decide to take my chances and follow her. I need to sit across from him and talk to him today. I need to understand if he knew Cole's cousin and what really happened back then. I need to figure out if what did happen has to do with the person who killed Vivian and pinned it on Jayden in the first place.

She stops in front of a door and opens it letting me in first. "I thought we could talk," she says.

I walk in taking a seat on the chair across from the desk. The office is small and crowded with several files on the desk but it doesn't prevent her from reaching for the one she wants. "So you're Jayden's half-brother?"

She's different than the previous doctor I met here from first impressions. He was willing to hear me out and let me see Jayden while I can see her saying no. She probably wants to start comparing Jayden and I. Find out by the more I talk if I'm unstable, on the verge of becoming unhinged.

"I thought I was going to be able to talk to him." I don't answer her question.

"I understand you talked to Dr. Chamberlain about why you want to visit but he isn't here anymore."
