Eric's wife appeared at his side just then, a small pretty woman he introduced as Joclyn. "We've got to get going, honey," she said to Eric. To me she said, "Plane to catch." "Oh, right," I said. Studying her, I saw she was thick in the middle, maybe three months pregnant. Eric handed me his card. "Call me," he said. Staring me straight in the eye, he added: "Really. I mean it." We hugged goodbye. Just as Joclyn took him by the arm, leading him away, he turned to me and said in a low voice: "Meir's brother Daniel's lineage. That's where the story is."

Wow, I couldn't believe he said that, handing me a big, secret, delicious piece of information — or was it a red herring to lead me astray, start me down the wrong path? On the drive home, that was all I could think about. Janet slept the whole way. I did my best to focus on traffic, but my mind was whirring... Daniel, which one was he? It had been awhile since I'd focused on the Gottlieb family history, and the only one I really knew anything about was Victor's great grandfather, Meir, who'd remained behind in Lviv while three of his children emigrated to Canada. Meir was the one who'd ostensibly divided the Bukh into four parts. Hmmm.

Over the next few days I attempted a little research. I was really busy, so I didn't get a chance to do much. What I learned was Daniel Gottlieb, born 1868, was a biochemist who relocated from Lviv to Bucharest, city of his wife Malka's birth, where he worked for a pharmaceutical company. The family moved to Romania in 1902, remaining there till just before WWI when they emigrated to Palestine.

All this greatly piqued my interest since George and I were about to embark on a ten day trip to Romania to meet up with my cousin, Laura, who was currently living in France, and her brother, Eddie, who lived in Kyoto. Serendipity. Perhaps while I was there, I could nose around a little, learn something about Daniel's family and the Bukh. I had a funny, slightly creepy feeling about it... that this trip, which we had planned on the spur of the moment, was going to be tinged with mystery, darkness, odd events. But that may have had to do with notions of Dracula and haunted Transylvanian forests.

Meanwhile, I want to catch you up on a few things that have come to light since the kidnapping and return of Cecily Rose.
