How long we stood there I can't tell you. The misters came on with their shh shh sound and hypnotized me. I remembered dank cavelike smells from the last time I'd been in here, but now lavender and thyme predominated, and I began to think of a symphony with different layers of sound and realized I was experiencing a kind of synesthesia where smells formed melodic patterns that moved me in ways that only music could. How weird was that? I wondered if Eric next to me was experiencing the same thing. I didn't want to say anything. I'm not even sure I could have, locked into place in what felt like a drugged enchantment.

Finally Eric took my hand and said, "Okay, now I'm going to show you something." He led me to the back of the shed, stopping at one of the plant-laden tables and plucking a tiny piece of herb from a pot with his fingers. "Here. Rub this over your face," he said.

I did as he told me, and immediately felt a wonderful tingling sensation.

Watching me in the dim light, Eric smiled and nodded. "Feels good, hunh? Wait till you see yourself in the mirror.

We left the shed, locking the door and walking drowsily across the grass. Back in the house, I almost ran to the bathroom to stare at myself in the mirror. The change I saw was pretty dramatic.

The herb I'd rubbed over my cheeks had smoothed out my skin, totally removing puff and wrinkles. It was even better than the Gerovital cream I'd bought in Romania. I'm a tough critic, but even to my own eyes I looked a good five years younger.

I found Eric in the kitchen. "Would you mind explaining?" I said.

He poured a cup of coffee and handed it to me. Cream and sugar were on the table next to his computer. I sat down and he took the chair across from me. "What you saw in there is a mystery to all of us," he said. "The one thing we know is, those herbs won't grow anywhere but in that shed and their effect can't be duplicated."
