We exchanged phone numbers with the model, Andra Danciu, and made a tentative date to meet at her mother's house in Brasov the following Tuesday. In the next two days we explored the region and I had several more adventures as a dublura, people staring and pointing at me, some asking for my autograph, some wanting to touch me — or vice versa, have me lay my hands on them. I began to tense up every time I went out in public. If I was with my cousin, Laura, she'd shoo fans, admirers and detractors away, like a farm girl hissing at geese or chickens. She'd had plenty of experience with unwanted publicity due to her fight with her dad's step nieces who'd made false claims on his estate.

In fact, the more she told me, the more I realized how unsafe it was for her to be staying at Fred's old apartment in Hochfelden. There had already been an attempt on her life when a strange woman, an ally of the step nieces, had approached her in a public sauna, offering a glass of water that had questionable additives (Laura secretly poured the contents of the glass into her stainless steel thermos and later had them analyzed: ethylene glycol). We all counseled Laura not to return to France where things were becoming increasingly dangerous, first because of the court case in September, and second because of rising anti-semitism. None of us had grown up with religion, but we were Jews nonetheless and proud of our heritage. Laura was a fighter, not one to be silenced. Our family had been forced to leave Hitler Germany and here we were again, battling one of the darkest stains on human history.
