The Bukh

Eric told me in these words:

There is no estimation of how important the volumes of the Bukh are. Together they provide codes regarding humanity's future and the meaning of life, as well as a cornucopia of hitherto unknown medical remedies that could put an end to virulent illnesses such as cancer and diseases of old age.

To his knowledge there were four volumes:

1) The one that had traveled to Canada with Victor's grandfather, and had already been read and studied (minus Victor's additions) by the Lemberg Foundation.

2) Meir's sister, Raizel, had inherited Volume Two. There were rumors she'd been burned as a witch. Volume Two may have perished with her.

3) Daniel had taken Volume Three to Israel via Romania. Its contents had been read and partially copied by an Israeli historian, but the volume had totally vanished sometime in the 1950s.

4) Benyamin, the youngest sibling, sent Volume Four to Berlin with his daughter, Eva. She and her family perished at the hands of the Nazis, who probably also stole the fourth volume.

Eric had demonstrated the power of the plants growing in Victor's shed so I would understand in no uncertain terms the importance of the Bukh, with its many medical recipes

Armed with that knowledge, I had no choice but to move forward in an investigation of my dublura, Maria, and her daughter, Sabina, hoping that one of them would offer up clues as to the whereabouts of Volume Three.

In the meantime, it's come to light that the body found beneath the tiny house where Cecily Rose had been imprisoned, was not Victor's. From dental records, it was determined that the remains belonged to a middle-aged chiropractor who had disappeared without a trace in 2001 — perhaps the one described in CD Knowles' book, A Hidden Grave.* The implications of that were chilling, but for the moment all I could think of was the possibility that Victor was still alive.

On another note, CD Knowles, whoever he or she is, recently contacted my editor at ArtProfiler to see about contributing to the site as an advice columnist. More on that later.
