Cenn got up extremely early for his standards. Five o clock in the morning. He went outside quietly, trying not to wake anyone up. He went to his training field, stepping close to the lever. He didn't want to have to use that power again, but the time was right, and he needed to learn how to control it. He pulled the lever down, but pulled it back up again. He then pulled it down halfway. This was the combination that he set for the field to configure in such a way where he was able to punch all of the targets.
"Here goes nothing." he told himself. He felt bad. Kane had told him that he would help him with developing his power, when he had already known how to use it. The targets spring to life moving around him, but much closer. His eyes flashed blue, but faded. He couldn't use full power, otherwise there would be another crater created by himself in the world. His Omnishard still started to glow, but his eyes stayed the same. The same aura that engulfed his fist that night appeared again, and he remembered. One of the targets moved quickly towards him, and he punched it straight in the bullseye. The entire target shattered into hundreds of pieces. More and more targets charged and strafed, but all of them were shattered from the impact of his fist. They kept coming, and he kept punching. With every punch, he slowly started to increase in power, until he noticed that with every punch he made there was a small shockwave, so he backed off a little bit. He didn't want to wake any of the neighbors up at five in the morning. The targets kept coming nonstop. He had made this many targets for a reason. As he punched one of the targets, he heard a low whisper.
"Wow..." it said. He turned around and saw Kairi standing at the back gate. She was still in her pajamas and her hair was strewn in various different directions. As he turned around, one of the targets charged straight into his back, knocking him over and making him fall on his face. Kairi ran over and pulled the lever back up.
"Are you okay?!" She said, clearly worried. Cenn day up and started laughing. Kairi started to laugh as well. They were both sitting down on the floor, laughing their heads off. When they both calmed down, Kairi looked at him in the eyes.
"So what was that?" She asked curiously.
"It's kind of hard to explain..." he said cautiously.
"Come on..." She said. He couldn't say no.
"Fine..." he said. He explained his entire backstory to her. The day his parents died, how he came into the town and was unconscious for a month. Everything.
"Wow..." She said, "That's so sad..." Her face said it all. Her eyes had a dull look to them, and she wasn't as optimistic as she usually was. She felt really bad for him. He pulled her into a hug. She seemed kind of surprised, but she hugged him back.
"You don't have to feel sorry for me," he said.
"Why shouldn't I?" She said.
"Because I've been living with this for a while, and I've told myself one thing all this time." He pulled away from the hug and put his hands on her shoulders. "Do you want to hear what it is?"
She nodded. "My family wouldn't want me to live my life feeling sorry for myself. They'd want me to live my life to the fullest and let nothing bring me down."
She nodded once. Her eyes shone with a new passion. The passion to live. She hugged him again quickly and then got up.
"Can you show me that sword you told me about?" She said, going back to her old optimistic self.
"Sure." He said and got up as well. They both quietly went inside and went to the kitchen table, where the sword still lay inside of its box. The Omnishard was still as prominent as it was the night before.
"Wow," whispered Kairi, "it's huge!"
"I need to try and lift it."
"Lift it?! How are you going to lift that?!"
"Like this..."
He walked over to the table, gripping the handle tightly. His Omnishard started to glow, and the irises of his eyes turned a light blue, although his pupils stayed the same shade of grey. The aura formed around both of his fists this time, and he started to lift the sword. It was surprisingly light, but that was because of his enhanced hands. He lifted it up in front of him, inspecting the blade's details. There was some kind of writing on it that he recognized a little bit. It was the native Harpean language. The symbols ran down the side of the edge without a sharp blade, although he couldn't read it, since he was never taught the language.
"Woah..." Kairi said in amazement. "You lifted it!"
They walked out the back door and Cenn told Kairi to stand back. He swung the sword around, not just that but with surprising speed. He turned and swung it with all his might. A small slice of wind cut through the air. He held the sword up to his face, and he smiled. It was the coolest thing he had ever been gifted. He dug it into ground, stepping back to look at it. Kairi walked next to him and they stood shoulder to shoulder, staring at the humongous sword.
"Well," said a familiar voice coming from the door, "looks like you didn't need my help at all."
Cenn looked at the doorway. There stood Kane, leaning on the post with a smirk on his face. He walked over to Cenn and put a hand on his shoulder. He looked into his eyes. They were white again, as he was not using his power at that moment.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He said. He looked hurt.
"I have an explanation..." Cenn started. "I didn't tell you for one specific reason. I didn't tell anyone for one specific reason." He looked at Kane right in the eyes.
"I didn't want anyone to be afraid." Kane's eyes widened. "If people knew what I was capable of, then they would be afraid of me. People would look at me and see pure destruction. They'd run in the opposite direction. I'd be alone. With no one to call my friend." He looked down at his feet.
"Hey." Kane said lifting Cenn's head to meet his eyes. "No one would think that. Or if anyone would, I definitely would not." He stepped back from Cenn. "To be honest, Cenn," he said looking very serious, "I've been keeping something from you, too."
Cenn looked at Kairi, who looked at him, then looked back to Kane. "What do you mean?"
Kane started to unbutton his shirt up to his chest. But as he got there, Cenn noticed something. A small bump was showing through his shirt. As he came down to where the bump was, Cenn inhaled sharply. He unbuttoned the last button before the bump would be revealed. What Cenn saw, he was completely amazed by.
The bump was an Omnishard. Kane had been hiding an Omnishard all this time. The Omnishard was a milky white, and it was rhombus-shaped, as opposed to Cenn's Omnishard, which was emerald shaped.
"You have an Omnishard?" Cenn asked.
"Yes. I have a stage two Omnishard."
Now Cenn was extremely confused. "Stage two?"
"That's right," said Kane, sighing, "You don't really know much about Omnishards, do you?"
Cenn looked embarrassed. He had an Omnishard, so he felt obligated to know about them, but he just didn't get it. The only part he got from his research was the types of magic and the way you could activate them. He shook his head.
"Kairi," Kane said. She looked up at him. "How about you go home while I talk to Cenn about this. It can get a little boring to a person who doesn't have an Omnishard." She nodded slowly, said good bye to Cenn, then walked through the back gate.
"Alright," Kane said, "Let's get started."
"Omnishards a combination of two things. The users own magical energy, and a crystalline substance known as omnium. The only way Omnishards can manifest in a persons body is if that omnium is paired with enough energy to sustain itself. Omnishards are the source of every magic users' power. They come in five stages. In stage one, the user meets the minimum requirements in order to unlock the Omnishard. The Omnishard is clear in color, and it gives you minimal control over the elements. In stage two, the stage that I possess, you are slightly more powerful than the minimum. You get a significant power boost, but not too much that you can do any major damage to higher levels. The color is white. In stage three, you get a power boost that's about an eighth of the amount of power that you get from the next stage. You get some pretty significant control over the magics, so it's a good level to have. The color is a light pink. Then there's stage four, which makes you a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. You get a big power boost, and you are able to control elements with ease. The color is usually a mint green. But then there's stage five..." he trailed off at the mention of stage five.
"What about stage five?" Cenn asked.
"You see," Kane began, "stage five is kind of unknown to most. It's so rare that not many people have been able to document its abilities. From what I have gathered about it, it is an extremely powerful form. People with a stage five Omnishard can take out an entire army by themselves if they are skilled enough. They can do all kinds of crazy things. If you thought stage four was powerful, you haven't even heard of stage five." He paused. "It's said that only three people in every other generation get a stage five Omnishard on average."
"Only three people?!" Cenn was shocked.
"In every other generation." Kane added. "So the power usually either skips a generation or there's only one or two in the generation that it skips."
Cenn sat down in the grass, trying to take this all in. But there was one thing that Kane hadn't said.
"What's the color for a stage five Omnishard?"
Kane was silent. He didn't answer the question at first.
"Well?" Cenn pushed the question.
Kane sighed. "Blue."
Cenn's eyes widened. He looked at the back of his hand at his Omnishard. The light blue crystal gleamed on his hand. He was shaking; trembling in fear. He was a stage five? How could he be a stage five? There must be a mistake, he couldn't have been given this amount of power.
"Y-you're sure?" Cenn asked quietly.
"Positive. That's the only amount of tangible evidence to the existence of a stage five Omnishard."
"So you're telling me," Cenn started, "that I'm among one of the most powerful people on the planet?"
"So it seems." Kane said matter-of-factly. Cenn closed his hand into a fist, starting to get angry at Kane.
"How could you keep this from me for all this time?!" He said, furious. Cenn's eyes flashed blue, but went back to normal. He needed to control his anger, otherwise would hurt one of the only people that he loved.
"To be honest," he said, "I wanted to keep this from you for the longest time possible." Cenn's anger receded. "I didn't want you to live with the burden of immense power, especially because of how young you were when I first met you."
Cenn walked closer to Kane and gave him a hug. The stood there for a while, in silence. Cenn broke the silence.
"I think of you as my father, you know that right?"
Kane held back tears. He had never had anyone who thought so fondly of him.
"Even since I found you, I've always thought of you as a son."
They broke from the hug.
"So why did you decide to tell me now?" Cenn asked.
"That's the part I hoped you would forget about."
He walked over to the sword and put his hand on it.
"Something is happening, Cenn. Something bad."
