Chapter 5

Cenn woke up next to Kairi. He looked over at her. She was still smiling. He slid his wing out from under her and tucked a blanket under her. He put his armor over his clothes, and he walked out of the door as quietly as possible. He walked through the common room into the kitchen. He opened some of the cabinets to find waffle mix, cereal, syrup, and some snack foods. He took the eggs and some butter from the fridge, he took a pan from one of the lower cabinets in the room. He spread some butter on the pan to make it so the eggs didn't stick. He cracked some eggs onto the pan and started to make some fried eggs.
Kai opened the door.
"Hey," he said to Cenn.
"You want some eggs?" Cenn asked.
"Sure."
"We have a long day ahead of us so I decided to make a good breakfast."
"You sound like a mom..."
"Shut up."
The door opened again and Kane walked into the room.
"You want some eggs?" Cenn asked.
"Okay."
Cenn gave Kai and Kane some eggs on a plate and they walked to the dining room table.
"So," started Kai, "How'd it go with Kairi?" He winked at him.
"Oh come on," Cenn exclaimed, "do you really have to start with this?"
"I'm just asking..."
"It went fine. We went to sleep and it was all fine."
"Where did you sleep..?"
Cenn was silent for a moment.
"...Next to her..."
"Aww how cute."
"You are such a jerk," Cenn said jokingly.
Just then Kairi opened the door to the kitchen, and Cenn suddenly got flustered.
"G-good morning Kairi!" He said. Kai snickered.
"Good morning..." She said and yawned.
"Do you want some eggs? Or I could make you something else?"
"Eggs are fine..." She said. She walked over to him.
"I can take over if you would like."
"S-Sure." She put her hands on the handle, and her fingers touched his hand. Cenn's face instantly turned red.
"Are you okay, Cenn?" She looked genuinely worried. "You look like you have a temperature."
"N-no I'm fine!" He said and brought some eggs over to the table.
Kai and Kane were dying of laughter over how awkward Cenn was. Cenn was completely and utterly embarrassed.
Kairi sat down next to Cenn, and they all ate their eggs.
After they were done, Kai spoke.
"Alright." He said. "Today, we go back to the city."
They all nodded their heads.
"Kairi, I want you to come with me for a second."
Kairi went with Kai to a different room.
Kane and Cenn waited at the table.
"How are you handling all of this, Cenn?" Kane asked.
"It's not me you should be worried about," Cenn said, "How are you dealing with this? This hasn't really happened to you before."
"Listen, Cenn. You've been through a lot. Your family's death, your home being destroyed, and now this. This must be very hard on you."
"It's fine, I can deal with it."
Kai walked back into the room.
"Gentlemen," he said, "may I present to you, the new and improved, Kairi!"
She walked in and Cenn's mouth opened slightly. Kai has given her armor, covering her shoulders, chest, and legs. Her dirty blonde hair fell in front of her face. Strapped to her waist were two daggers, also given to her by Kai.
Kai also had armor on, but his black hooded shirt was still on under it. He had a sword strapped to his waist, about two feet long. The blade was sky blue, and Cenn didn't know whether that was natural or just stained.
"Alright." Cenn said, grabbing his sword from the common room, "let's head back up..."
He opened the door to the sewer. They all walked out the door and Kai put his hand on it. The door started disappearing, almost fusing with the wall surrounding it. Kai turned back to them and nodded. They walked back using the path they took to get to the bunker. They came up to the manhole.
"We're here." Kai said.
"I'm almost scared to see what's up there..." Kairi said, moving closer to Cenn.
"Don't worry," said Cenn, turning towards her. He pulled her into a hug.
"If anything happens, just call me over, okay?"
"Okay..."
Cenn started to climb the ladder to the manhole. He pushed it open, and slowly slipped himself through the hole.
What he saw was horrific.
"Guys..." he said. "You might want to see this."
They all started to climb through the manhole, each giving the same horrified expression.
Everything was burnt to the ground. Blood stained the pavement. Shops, buildings, houses, were all burnt or knocked down. There was barely anything left of the town. Bodies littered the streets.
"Oh my god..." Kairi exclaimed as a tear ran down her face.
"This can't be real..." Cenn walked over to a little market stand that was still on fire.
He suddenly remembered something. What happened to his house?
He suddenly ran away from the group.
"Cenn!" Kane called out to him, but Cenn was already in the air, using the momentum of his run to lift off. He flew above the wreckage and found his street. He landed in front of the ruins of his house. He started digging through the rubble to find something that had survived. After a solid ten minutes of digging, he found something.
It was the lamp that was next to his bed. The one made of gears. The bulb was broken, but the lamp cover was still intact. He looked at the lamp, remembering the first time he had ever seen it. He never thought that a lamp would hold such great importance to him. He looked down at his left leg. The peg was dirty, he should clean it later. He examined the gear lamp. It was a normal lamp, but when he looked at the bottom, he noticed something off. There was a little compartment under it. He pulled it open, and out fell a ring. He looked at it in detail. It was made of gold, and and had a dark green gemstone embedded into it. He slipped it on.
It was exactly his size. He covered his hand with his gauntlet so it would hide the ring.
"Cenn!" He heard in the distance. He took the lamp with him and flew over to where they were.
"What are you doing?" Kairi said, instantly pulling him into a hug. "You had me worried sick..."
"I'm sorry..."
"Where did you even go?" Asked Kane.
"I went back to our house. To see if anything had survived."
"I see..." Kane looked at the lamp. "You found the lamp?"
"Yeah..."
"Remember how interested in that thing you were? You just kept flicking it on and off, turning it in different directions to see the different patterns."
"We should look for survivors." Kai cut in.
"Yeah." Cenn agreed.
"Alright, Cenn, you scout for people up in the air. The rest of us will split up in different directions. Got it?"
"Yeah," said everyone in unison.
Cenn took off. He flew around town, looking and listening for people. He did at least three circles around the town before he heard someone. It sounded like a girl.
He flew down, searching for where the voice was coming from. He came the the ruins of a building and started digging through the rubble. He uncovered a girl, who looked about nine or ten years old, with long black hair. She was unconscious, but still alive. He carried her back to the meeting place and placed her down on the ground. Cenn used his light magic to heal her wounds. A bright white mist emitted from his hands, and it healed all of her wounds. While this was happening, the rest of the group came back.
Kai has brought back another girl, who looked about both Cenn and Kai's age. She had brown hair that went down to her hips and brown eyes. She also had some freckles that spread from the top of her cheeks to where the bridge of her nose was. Kai said her name was Girae.
Kairi has just found some food and Kane some more weapons.
The young girl that Cenn was healing started to stir. Kairi crouched down beside her and watched as she woke up. She opened her eyes, and everyone gasped. One of her eyes' iris was deep purple, and her other eye was lime green. Her pupils were completely white.
"Um..." she whimpered in a little squeaky voice, "w-who are you people?"
"My name is Cenn." He helped her off the ground. "Can you stand on your own?"
"Y-Yeah..." She said.
"Do you remember anything from last night?"
She was quiet. "Yes..." she began, "these men in black clothes came into my house and started to steal everything... and when my parents tried to get involved..." Her eyes started to tear up.
Cenn pulled her into a hug. She was just like him. She was the same age as Cenn when his parents died, and they died from the same causes.
"Do you remember anything else?"
"I remember getting really angry... and then all of the sudden everything around me just... blew away..."
"Blew away?"
"I don't know how to say it..."
"Well why don't you tell me your name?"
"Aori..."
"Do you want to travel with us, Aori?"
She looked into his white eyes, and she was suddenly really excited.
"You mean it?!" She said.
"Of course!"
She jumped into his arms and wrapped her arms and legs around him, like a monkey hanging onto a tree trunk. She smiled at him and Cenn laughed.
Aori climbed onto Cenn's back and sat on his shoulders.
"You're wings are really soft." She said.
"Thanks."
"So where do we go now?" asked Kane.
"I hear that there is a resistance against the Black Fist that is forming in middle country. They could use people like us, and Cenn more specifically, to help them take them down."
"How far is it to the middle country?"
"About a few weeks on horseback."
"What about on motorcycle?"
Everyone looked at Kane with a confused expression on their face.
"Follow me. Hopefully it didn't get burnt down..."
They walked back to Cenn and Kane's house. Kane dug through the rubble and found a little trap door where the storage room used to be.
"Yes!" He said in excitement. He opened the trapdoor and everyone went down into it. When they were all down there, they couldn't see anything, as it was very dark.
"Alright." Kane said. "You guys ready for this."
He flipped on the lights. The lights illuminated on a huge room, with tools and scrap metal scattered everywhere. In the middle of the room, there were three motorcycles. One of them was painted orange, another purple, and the last one green.
"You sure these things still work?" Asked Cenn, "these things look pretty old..."
"That's because I made them myself," Kane explained, "I found some old spare parts outside of the city, so I decided to build these babies."
"I CALL THE GREEN ONE!" Yelled Kai.
"But there are only three motorcycles, Kane." Cenn said, "and there are six of us."
"We will be going in partners." Said Kane. "Girae, you'll go with Kai. Aori, you'll go with me, and Kairi will go with Cenn."
They all got on their motorcycles. Kairi, wrapped her arms around his waist, and he started the engine. A loud vroom exploded out of the cycle, and Cenn liked the sound of it. The rest of them started their engines.
"Alright!" Kane said, and he clicked a button on his motorcycle. Kane had picked the purple one, and Cenn had picked the orange one.
The wall in front of them started to lift up to reveal a tunnel that led to an opening in a nearby ledge that was outside the city.
"YOU GUYS READY?!" Cenn yelled over the noise.
They all have a thumbs up and Girae whispered something to Kai, who nodded.
They all slammed on their gas petals. The motorcycle was faster than Cenn thought. They sped through the tunnel and off the ramp that led to the road.
Their journey to the Resistance H.Q. had begun.
