Cenn sat in a large open field looking up at the sky. Cenn almost felt a spiritual connection between himself and the sky, it's open space almost calling to him. He closed his eyes and felt the breeze blow through his hair. His serenity, however, was interrupted by a voice behind him.
"I knew I'd find you here." A boy sat next to him.
"Oh, hey Vergil..." Cenn said, looking over at the silver haired boy. "I don't come here THAT often, do I?"
"Dude, you are here basically everyday after school. It's actually kind of a problem."
Cenn laughed to himself. Cenn and Vergil were both nine years old at the time, so school was still an essential part of their daily life.
"I don't know, Vergil..." Cenn stopped to think.
"Have you ever had a connection to something and you just can't explain why?"
"Not really." Vergil said. "Although, if you count my absolute infatuation with food, then yes, I do understand what you mean."
The both of them started to laugh hysterically.
"I sort of..." Cenn continued after they stopped laughing, "Have this...connection with the sky...Like it's calling to me..."
"Well, you are kind of a bird...man...thing."
"Harpy."
"Yeah, that."
"I love flying, I really do..." Cenn looked up again, "But it's not really the sky itself that is calling to me...It's more...something beyond the sky..."
"Oh."
They were both silent for a moment.
"Hey," Cenn broke the silence, "You wanna hang out for a while?"
"Sure." Vergil smiled.
They both got up and walked towards Cenn's house.

As Vergil walked back to his house from Cenn's, he saw a group of kids down the dirt road, looking at him. One of the kids, Vergil's friend, walked over to Vergil and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Were you hanging out with that kid again?" He asked.
"Um..." Vergil tried to come up with a lie, but to no avail.
"Yes...I was..."
"You know what I told you right?"
"Yes...I know..."
"Tell me what I told you."
Vergil was silent for a little bit before speaking again.
"Cenn Carter is a freak of nature and I should not play with him."
"There you go..."
The kid started to walk back over to the group, but Vergil couldn't stand it any longer. He needed to speak up.
"Why is he a freak?!" Vergil yelled.
The kid stopped dead in his tracks.
"You wanna know why he's a freak..?" The kid said.
He turned around and looked at Vergil right in the eyes.
"Every day after school he goes to the same spot and all he does is stare into the clouds like an idiot."
He put one finger up.
"He's half-harpy, so his blood is impure."
He put up a second finger.
"And last, but not least," His eyes narrowed.
"He acts like nothing is wrong with him."
Vergil was furious now.
"YOU SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH!!!"
"Am I wrong, though?"
Vergil looked down at his feet. He wasn't wrong. But hearing all of that bad stuff being said about his friend...
"Thought so..." the kid had a wide grin on his face.
"He. Is. My. Friend!"
"He'll just betray you eventually. He'll probably run off and die alone somewhere in the woods."
"That's not true!"
"Oh, is it? Just watch, by the end of this week he'll be dead and you'll have to accept the fact that he was never your friend."
Vergil stood his ground.
"Fine! We'll see about that!"
Vergil stormed off towards his house, walking up the stairs and slamming the door behind him.
"Vergie?" He heard his mother call.
"Hi, mom!"
His mother stood in the opening to the kitchen. Her long silver hair shone in the light.
"How was school today?"
"Good, I guess."
"You guess?"
"It was fine."
"Okay... Did you have fun at Cenn's house?"
"Yes, I mean I always do."
"Great!"
Vergil was quiet for a second.
"Mom?"
"Yes, honey?"
"Do you think Cenn is a freak?"
There was a long pause.
"Where would you ever get that idea from?"
"Some kids told me that Cenn was a freak and that I shouldn't be friends with him anymore."
"Honey..."
"Is it true, Mom?"
"Cenn isn't a freak, honey. He's just a little different than most people."
"A little different?" Vergil started to get a little angry. "All he does is stare into the sky! He doesn't do anything else besides read and play with his sister! He's a half-human half-harpy hybrid! He doesn't know it, but everyone makes fun of him behind his back! And now I'm starting to see why!"
"VERGIL!"
Vergil stopped talking and covered his mouth. What was he saying? How could he talk about his friend like this? He was turning into those kids...
Vergil started to cry.
"What am I saying..?" He said between sobs.
His mother pulled Vergil into a hug.
"I'm a horrible person..." Vergil said, muffled by his face in his mother's chest.
"Don't say that, honey."
"But I am..."
"You just let what those kids say get to you, that's all. It's okay..."
His mother broke away from the hug, knelt down, and caressed his cheek with her hand.
"You are a very strong young man, you know that?"
Vergil nodded his head.
"Go to your room now. You can take a nap if you would like. Dinner will be ready by then."
"Okay." Vergil walked upstairs to his bedroom. He sat down on his bed and thought to himself. By the way his mother was talking, he came to believe that she didn't really think Cenn was a freak, but she still thought he was different. Vergil felt his shoulder where his Omnishard was. They didn't really teach anything about Omnishards in school. They had a magic class, but only a select few of people got into that. Vergil closed his eyes. He wouldn't let what that kid said get to him. Cenn wouldn't die. Would he..?

Later that week, the news broke out that Cenn's family, along with Cenn himself, had been killed due to a large explosion that completely took out their house.
When the news came to Vergil, he had lost it. He would never be able to see Cenn again. But maybe that was a good thing. Maybe now, because Cenn was dead, he wouldn't be ridiculed for being friends with a freak. Still, he wished he could see his friend's house one more time. He pictured it in his mind, trying to reach out to the place. He closed his eyes. Something changed when he closed them, however. It suddenly grew colder, like he was outside.
Vergil opened his eyes. There he was, standing over the crater where Cenn's house used to be. He fell to his knees, and tears started to stream down his face. He stayed there for a little bit, but then something changed. His crying changed.
To laughter.
He laughed and laughed, louder and louder. This wasn't the humorous laugh that he usually had, though. It was different.
Insane.
"Cenn is dead..." he said to himself, smiling like a madman.
"If that kid got that prediction right...then all of that other stuff about him being a freak was all true!!"
He laughed again.
"I WAS FRIENDS WITH A FREAK!!!"

Vergil walked up to the front gates of the Black Fist headquarters. He had a long black cloak on. He was noticed by a guard.
"Hey, kid. You shouldn't be here."
Suddenly, Vergil disappeared.
"What?!"
The guard didn't have time to say anything else before his throat was slit.
Vergil walked into the building with a wild look in his eyes.
He had left his mother and father without telling them, only leaving a note to explain why he had left.
Vergil stealthily avoided any sight whatsoever, and made it to the throne room, where the leader sat.
Vergil flung the doors open.
The guards put up their weapons.
"Who in the hell are you?" The leader said, looking more angry than confused.
Vergil suddenly disappeared in a flash of deep purple, teleporting behind each of the four guards and killing them one by one before teleporting back to where he was.
The guards fell, dead.
"What the-" Suddenly, Vergil was in front of the leader, with the tip of his dagger at the man's throat.
"Give me the position of leader." Vergil demanded. "I'll let you live if you do."
"How many more guards have you killed?"
"Only the one outside."
The leader was silent.
"Fine." The leader said, "You seem like a good person to be the leader anyway..."
"Was that sarcasm..?" Vergil pressed harder.
"I'm sorry!" He said, "Y-You can be the leader! Just don't kill me, please!"
"That's better."
Vergil put the dagger down. He took the leader by the collar and dragged him over to the balcony.
"GATHER ROUND!!" Vergil yelled.
Soldiers started to gather around the balcony. Vergil's was also being broadcasted over the loudspeakers as well.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE BLACK FIST! I AM YOUR NEW LEADER!"
There were murmurs going around the whole room. Some included, "new leader?", "Look!", "Our new leader is an child?", and so on.
Vergil smiled.
"Things are going to be different around here..."
