Cenn pretended to be asleep in the barracks with the rest of his friends, who had gotten to the base a couple of hours ago. He waited for the clock to turn to 12:00. It was currently 11:57. He looked up at the ceiling, and he noticed a small hatch in the roof. He flew up to it, opened it, then landed on the roof. The view was pretty spectacular. The rolling hills varied in size and shape, making for a very unique horizon. He looked in the direction of where the city was. He sat down, then laid on his back, looking at the sky.
It was happening again. His connection with the sky had faded after his family was killed, but now it was back, and it was stronger than ever. His eyes flashed blue, and his Omnishard started to glow involuntarily.
"What?" He whispered to himself. He looked back into the sky. It pulsed blue, with a small bright point that it originated from.
*Your time has come, Cenn Carter,* said a voice in his head. It sounded like a young woman.
"Who are you?" He asked. Then, the pulsing stopped, the light vanished, and his Omnishard stopped glowing.
"Cenn?" Cenn whipped his head around, and saw Aori's head popping out of the hatch.
"A-Are you okay?" She said, "I heard you talking to yourself."
"I-I'm fine, Aori." Cenn said. "Come on up. We can start now."
He helped her up onto the roof, then they jumped down to the grassy ground. They started to walk over to a hill in the distance.
"Alright," Cenn said, clasping his hands together, "Let's get started!"
He turned around to face Aori.
"It looked like you already knew how to use some form of air magic."
Aori smiled. "Yeah. I can use it to fly and stuff!"
Cenn nodded. "That's how you got up to the hatch, wasn't it?"
"Yup!"
"I'll try to teach you how to use another kind of magic besides air," he said, "It's pretty useful to have a Stage Five Omnishard and know multiple elements. That's coming from personal experience."
Aori nodded.
"We are going to find which elements pertain to you." Cenn put his hands behind his head.
"Let's try fire first."
Aori stood ready.
"Now," he said, "I want you to think of a lush forest."
Aori closed her eyes, then smiled as she got the picture in her mind.
"Okay," he said, "Now imagine a small ember falling down onto one of the trees."
Aori nodded.
"Now imagine that tree bursting into flames, and then the entire forest burning."
Aori's face suddenly grew tense.
But nothing happened.
"Okay," Cenn said, "looks like you can't use fire magic..."
Aori sighed.
"Okay, now let's try water..."
Aori closed her eyes again.
"Now imagine an open field." Cenn said, "And then imagine that field suddenly being flooded, covering the grass."
Aori's face tensed. Then, suddenly, out of the ground, small water droplets started to float up off the ground, forming around Aori's hands.
"So you can use water magic," Cenn said, smiling.
Aori opened her eyes, and saw the water floating around her hands.
She giggled as she passed her other hand through the liquid, and swished it around.
"Alright, you can release it now." Cenn said.
"Okay." The water dropped to the ground again.
"Alright," Cenn said, "you have two basic elements...so we can try an advanced one."
"Advanced?" Aori looked confused.
"Like lightning or ice." Cenn lifted his hand, and it started to spark.
"They're called advanced elements because they can't be found on the planet commonly. Only under certain circumstances."
"Oh," Aori nodded in understanding.
"Let's try lava." Cenn said, as he wanted to try to find out if Aori had a different magic than him. All of Cenn's elements were advanced, except for light, which was in a category all its own.
"Alright." Aori closed her eyes again.
"Now imagine a mountain. It's peak just grazing the clouds."
"Okay, I got it." Aori said.
"Imagine that still image for a while."
Aori was quiet.
"Now, the peak explodes into a cloud of ash and fire, orange, fiery liquid spewing out!"
Aori tensed, then, suddenly, the ground below them cracked open, and a geyser of lava spewed out, almost burning Cenn's face.
Aori snapped open her eyes.
"Are you okay, Cenn?" She asked, worried.
"It's fine..." he said, "I've had worse injuries..." He looked down at his metal peg.
"Okay," She said.
"Well," Cenn said, brushing himself off, "We found out all your elements..."
"So how do I get my ability?" She asked in excitement.
"That is a little more difficult..." Cenn said.
"Why?" Aori asked.
"Because I can't make you discover your ability."
Aori frowned. "Why not?"
Cenn looked into the sky. "Your unique ability is unlocked when you go through some kind of emotional turmoil. I unlocked my unique ability when I watched my entire family die at my feet. Well, most of them at least." He was talking about Keri, of course.
"Oh..." Aori said, "I see."
Cenn walked over to Aori, and put a hand on her head, ruffling her hair long, black hair. She giggled a little.
"That's all for today," he said looking at the horizon. The sun was coming up, and he was sure that his friends would wake up soon. "You should get back. They'll be worried if they find you gone."
"What about you?" She said.
Cenn looked behind him.
"I'm just going to stay here for a while," he said, "They don't care if I wander off. As long as I come back they'll be fine."
"Oh," Aori said, "I'll see you inside."
Aori charged a stream of air magic, then released it, shooting her in the direction of the building. She landed on the roof of the barracks, next to the hatch. She looked back at Cenn, who had sat down next to the tree, his legs crossed.
She opened the hatch, then jumped down.
Cenn looked into the distance. What was that voice that he heard earlier? And that light...
He looked at the back of his hand, at his Omnishard. Did his Omnishard have to do with it? No, that couldn't be right.
Cenn walked down the hill and towards the barracks. When he looked into the sky one last time, he thought he could see the dot of blue light, but it was gone as fast as it came.
He sighed. "What is wrong with me..?" He said, as he flew up to the roof again. He landed on the top, and sat down to watch the sunrise. It was beautiful, as always. But this view made it look much prettier. He remembered the times when he got up early in the morning to watch the sunrise from the trees by his old home. When is parents were still alive. He wished that he could have that time back again. Maybe he could have more time with them before they went. He could've told them he loved them more often. Hell, he could even prevent the whole thing from happening. But, he couldn't. This was his life now, and there was nothing he could do to change that.
The sun was now up.
"Well..." he said, "time to go back..."
He opened the hatch, then jumped back down.——————
