Vergil sat on his throne, leaning on one hand. It had been three days since he sent out the attack squadron out to destroy the Resistance base. It shouldn't take this long to get back from an attack on a damaged base. He was growing impatient.
Suddenly, the doors to the throne room swung open, and in walked an injured soldier.
"My lord..." He said.
"Speak." Vergil responded.
"I come with important news...news of the attack on the Resistance Base..."
Vergil smiled. "Well then," he said, "I suppose we don't have to worry about them anymore?"
"Actually, my lord..." The soldier said, "it's the complete opposite of that..."
"What do you mean?" Vergil's voice was now a little more intimidating.
"Well..." the soldier's eyes fleeted around the room, "We almost had it..."
"Almost?!" Vergil was now furious. "I send most of my forces to bring down the Resistance, and all you can give me is ALMOST?!"
"My lord, I have an explanation!"
"Like I'd hear it!" Suddenly, Vergil disappeared.
The soldier was startled, but a whisper in his ear made the situation even more frightening.
"There is no excuse for this failure..." The soldier turned around as fast as he could. Vergil raised a dagger above his head and was about to strike, but the soldier spoke.
"CENN CARTER WAS THERE!!"
Vergil's dagger stopped about a centimeter away from the soldier's forehead.
"What did you say..?" Vergil spoke in a whisper.
The soldier gulped. "C-Cenn Carter was at the Resistance base..."
Vergil stood up straight, and sheathed his dagger.
"Cenn Carter is dead." Vergil stated, and walked back up to his throne.
"No he isn't," said the soldier, "I saw it with my own two eyes!"
Vergil brushed back his straight black hair from in front of his face, showing his bright red eyes.
"My men told me that his injuries were too severe for him to have lived. His leg was completely shattered and the blood loss would have been too much," he turned around to face the soldier. "He. Is. Dead."
"Then how do you explain that he looked exactly like how he was described to us?"
"It could've been a coincidence."
"His Omnishard was blue."
Vergil looked at the soldier straight in the eyes. He wasn't lying. Vergil sat down in his throne with his head in his hands.
"There was also another one with him," the soldier added, "I think you might know him as well."
"Who would this be..."
"The traitor."
Vergil was silent.
"My lord," he said, "I apologize for arguing with you."
"No need to apologize." Vergil looked back up at the soldier. "This changes everything. If the boy has made it to the base, they may actually have a chance of winning..."
"My lord," the soldier said, "what do we do?"
There was a long pause.
"I shall gather all of the soldiers in the main hall. I will break the news there."
"Yes, my lord." The soldier did the Black Fist salute, then turned to walk away.
"Wait a second."
The soldier stopped dead in his tracks.
"What is your name, might I ask?"
The soldier turned back around.
"Lars, my lord." He said.
"Lars..." Vergil nodded. "Okay, Lars. I want you to be my main intelligence unit. You seem like the kind of person for the job."
"T-Thank you, my lord!" Lars saluted again, then walked out of the room.
Vergil looked up at the ceiling, and exhaled.
"He's alive..." he said to himself. "Why does he have to be alive..."
Vergil put his left hand on his right shoulder. His Omnishard felt like a lump, just there most of the time. It had been a long time since he last used it in battle.
He smiled to himself. Maybe Cenn being alive was a good thing for him...Everyone was gathered in the main hall, with worried looks on their faces and mumbling to each other. Lars looked around. Everyone seemed to be in panic. He would too, but he knew what was going on, so he was fine. Lars looked down. He couldn't tell anyone about his new job as the main intel gatherer, that would make his friends think he was abandoning them for a higher position. Lars looked to his right, at the girl that was next to him. Her name was Heidi. She was on the shorter side, and she had her pure white hair cut into a bob. Her cheeks were naturally rosy, and her eyes were the same color, a light pink.
She leaned over and whispered to him.
"What do you think this is about?" She asked.
"I don't know..." Lars responded.
"People are really worried..."
"You don't have to be worried. It's probably just an announcement."
"He would have used the intercom..."
"Maybe it's just a little more important."
Suddenly, everyone was silent. The click of footsteps could be heard from behind the balcony. The click of boot heels on the ground grew louder, and louder, and louder. Then, they stopped. Suddenly the curtain opened, and there stood Vergil, the leader of the Black Fist. He wore a black cloak, under it, a grey sweater. He also wore tight pants and high, jet black boots. His red eyes gleamed over the crowd.
Everyone saluted. After a little bit, Vergil told everyone to stand down. Everyone listened carefully.
"I know many of you are wondering why I called you all here this fine afternoon." Vergil leaned on the balcony fence. "I wish this gathering was because of news that we could celebrate upon, but, unfortunately, this is not the case."
Vergil looked over at Lars for a brief moment.
"I gather you here today to tell you this. Cenn Carter is alive."
Everyone began to panic. People were yelling left and right. It wouldn't stop.
Suddenly a gunshot rang through air.
"SILENCE!!!" Vergil held his pistol high in the air, smoke coming off the barrel.
Everyone stood completely still.
"Now," Vergil regained his composure, "This should not be something that holds you all back. This," he slammed his fist against the fence bordering the balcony, "should be a motivation!" There was a long pause. "I have decided something," Vergil started to pace back and forth, "I have created a rule. Whoever kills Cenn Carter will be appointed as my right hand man."
Everyone stood and watched.
"I see you all like this idea," Vergil said mockingly, "it will be put to practice if one of you were to kill the boy."
Vergil started to walk back towards the curtain.
"Enjoy the rest of your day."
All of the could hear him chuckle menacingly to himself as he flung the curtain aside and walked back through the hallway.
"This is the end for you..." Vergil said to himself. "I cannot wait..." His eyes suddenly started to glow red.
"To watch you burn to ash..."———————————
