Fatherhood

As I entered Starbucks I could not miss a cherpy person waving at me. I made my way towards the counter to get an orange juice or some herbal tea for myself but Zach was already calling me to the table.

"I hope you don't mind it but I've already gotten you a drink," He handed me a cup and I quickly recognised the drink by its smell. It was a caramel latte with a lot of whipped cream on top. Furrowing my brows I put the drink down on the table and looked into questioning eyes of my ex husband.

"Zach, I'm sorry but I no longer drink coffee. I've gotten a really high pressure with pregnancy and I also got too fat... So I'm trying to reduce calories and avoid coffee," I bit my bottom lip waiting for his reaction. I was expecting him to freak out at how ungrateful I was for something he got me.

"Oh," Was the only thing he said after a couple silent seconds. His nose was a bit scrunched and even though I knew how impolite I might have been I didn't want to risk anything when it came down to Fiona. "I didn't know that. Sorry for not asking you about your wishes before," He then slowly said and gave me a reassuring smile.

"If you don't mind I'll pick up something else for myself. And this drink we can donate to someone homeless if you don't want to drink it?" Before I even finished my sentence Zach stood up and offered me his place on the comfortable looking sofa. I quickly took it since my feet hurt a lot and my knees were shaking due to nervousness.

"Is orange juice okay? I'll get it for you," He offered and never let my eyes go. I nodded while chewing on my bottom lip not knowing what else to say.

It took him approximately 10 minutes to return with another glass in the biggest size Starbucks had on offer. In the meantime I took my jacket off and replied to the messages I didn't have time to read on my way here. From time to time I also checked the queue Zach was in, only to spot how handsome he was looking today. His style definitely matured in the past few months, it must have been Tiffany's job. He was wearing a light grey t-shirt, combined with black jeans and black leathet jacket. The haircut he has was covering his baldness well and was enhanching his facial features.

"Here you are, Ki," The nickname he used sent shivers down my spine and made me squeak quietly. I gladly accepted the juice and made a huge sip of it.

"Thanks... It's kind of hard to even walk right now," I then said with a smile and Zach's look immediately fell down onto my stomach.

"It's gonna be a girl, right?" He asked insecurely and I spotted his hand moved a bit closer to my tummy but he pulled it back.

"Yes, Fiona. And Zach?" His eyes jumped up to mine, what made me chew on my lip again. "You can touch her, she always tries to communicate with people," I giggled and moved my hands from the stomach so his would have more space.

"What do you mean by... Communicating? She's a baby, she cannot co-," He started and I had to interrupt him, this time with a huge smile on my face.

"She can. Luke doesn't believe me but whenever anyone puts their hand on top of my stomach, she starts kicking like crazy. I think this is her way of talking to us," I bit my lip, knowing my face was glowing right now. It was the same every time I talked about my girl.

His eyes were so soft right now and I saw he rised his hands in order to put them on my stomach. To be completely honest, I was excited about this moment but on the other hand, I was super nervous about it.

"Well, I want to talk to her," He leant in and quickly but carefully touched my stomach. His hand's heat immediately felt so good and I felt Fiona moved as well.

"I think she..." I bit my lip, suddenly realising Fiona was actually Zach's daughter yet he didn't know about her. I was taken aback by how quickly his eyes focused on me and I felt him shifting closer to me. "I think she likes you, Zach," I quietly said before biting my lip.

"I feel her kicking," He said, a smile spreading on his face. I was no longer used to him being so close to me and I just had to inspect every inch of his face. I spotted a couple of new wrinkles around his eyes, how he cut himself while shaving his beard yet there was one thing that never changed on him - his blue eyes were shining brighter than the sun right now.

He then added his other palm on my stomach so now it was completely covered. He didn't apply much pressure on it and I suddenly wasn't sure he was even touching it. Before I could even realise what I was doing, I pressed my hand on top of his while never breaking the eye contact we shared.

"Don't you think I might be pressing too hard or something? I don't want to harm you or her? I'm just to worried. What if she's in pain, Kiara? What if I hurt you? I would never do that to you or her, I mea-," It seemed like he would never stop.

"Will you shut up?" I said and started giggling. It felt as if Fiona felt my emotions too since she started kicking wildly, digging her fists and knees inside my belly.

"She's so strong," Zach said with a shocked voice that made me giggle even harder.

"Zach, you've seen Ariel pregnant. Twice. You know how strong kids are," I was trying to keep my laughter to the minimum since we earned a lot of nasty looks already.

"Yeah but she seems to be so strong!" He then furrowed his brows and looked down. "Almost like her father," Were the quiet words he whispered that made me sad.

I knew he was referring to Luke and a part of me was telling me to let him know Luke had nothing to do with the baby. I didn't even know how Zach could have gotten such a crazy idea stuck inside his head. I was always against cheating and expecting a baby with Luke would mean that exactly.

But the other part of me kept reminding me we were exes with a reason. We just no longer functioned together as a married couple so why would I let him know about the fact he was going to be a father?

The worst thing was right now I saw no proper reason why we actually got divorced and my desire for being a Kornfeld family again was growing in my chest so quickly, I couldn't even stop it.
