The smell of strong coffee and morning breath filled the library. Finals had arrived. Sleepy slugs that walked the cozy Victorian-like building held large, heavy textbooks in one hand, and jumbo-sized coffee on the other. Loud, stretched yawns bounced off the wood, echoing through the whole building as Jamie walks through a row of desks, carrying 5 gigantic textbooks. She reaches a desk near the back and drops the textbooks.
"Come on, let's ditch. We can just wing the exams." Brooke says desperately yet cunningly.
Jamie looks at Brooke sternly saying, "And what? We fail? You become a sad article entertainment writer, and I-"
"What? You don't even want to become a dentist, right? So why try and do well on the exams?" Brooke suggests while yawning. "Plus I'm tired. Let's go drinking."
Jamie smiles at Brooke then laughs. "I don't think that the solution to being tired is drinking. Also, I need something to fall back on. If I never pursue becoming a lawyer, I'm okay with healthcare either way, I can do dentistry."
"What about the scholarship? Are you not going to send your application?" Brooke asks.
"No, I'll just- I don't know." Jamie says as she takes off her sweater.
Jamie looks at the desk full of textbooks and counts, then she says "Shoot, I forgot my other textbook at the dorm, will you look after my stuff for me?" Asks Jamie.
"Yeah, sure." Brooke replies.
Jamie speed-walks out of the library. After a new minutes, Brooke starts to tap on the table at a high speed rhythmically as thoughts starts circling her mind. The tapping stops. She takes Jamie's backpack, pulls out her laptop, and opens a word file. She skims through the essay quickly, making a few changes. She takes the word document, inserts it into a file, and emails the application to The British Columbia University. As soon as the email was sent, she shuts the laptop off, shoves it back into the bag, and slumps onto her chair, taking a deep breath.
After a few seconds, a man walks up to Brooke, sits down on the desk, saying, "are you a sea lion? Cause I can 'sea' you in my bed tonight!"
Brooke looks at the man with utter disgust. He wore a hoodie with baggy jeans and sandals. "I don't want to be rude bu-"
"There are plenty of fish in the sea, but you're the only one I'd like to catch and mount back at my place!" He says, cutting her off.
"I'm not interested, thanks." Brooke says quietly as she looks away, faking to study.
"Do you have a mirror in your pocket? Cause I can see myself in your pants!" The man says again, interrupting Brooke's fake studying.
Before Brooke could utter her words, Jamie yanks his ear, dragging him off of the desk and pulling him away from Brooke's sight.
After a few seconds you could hear Jamie yelling "STAY AWAY FROM HER!" As murmurs start to fill the space.
Jamie returns and sits across from Brooke. Both exchanges smiles and grins as they quietly study.
The two study until the sun set. Granted that Brooke slept for more than half of the time, both were confident and ready for the exams. They went home, slept, woke up, and took the exams.
When the week full of exams and late nights had ended. Jamie and Brooke went out drinking.
Jamie enters the musky bar, with the overpowering stench of excessive man cologne, and barf, surrounding them.
"Ew, smells like-" Jamie says as she grimaces in disgust.
"I know, I know" Brooke says softly, cutting her off. "But wait till you taste Jim's cocktails." She says as she takes in a deep breath and floats over to the bar.
"Jim who?" Jamie says as she wanders to the bar consciously.
Both of them sit at the bar and start to drink their cosmos. Jamie takes a sip at her first cocktail and her eyes widen with impressed expressions.
Brooke looks at Jim then looks at Jamie. She whispers to Jamie, "so what do you think of him?"
"What? You mean Jim?" Jamie whisperers surprisingly pointing at Jim.
"Don't point!" Brooke says slapping Jamie's hand away.
"Oh wait! I forgot to tell you. My marks for Mr. Francis' class came in and I got a 89%" Brooke says excitedly, taking Jamie's hand.
"Oh my lord! I'm so proud of you, finally all my work paid off." Jamie says smiling while pulling Brooke in for a hug.
"Oh, I have to go to the bathroom. Watch my drink for me, Kay?" Brooke says as she gets off of her seat and walks towards the washroom.
After Brooke enters the washroom, Jim looks at Jamie and asks, "you guys are cute, how long have you two been together?"
"How long? Uhh, Brooke and I aren't dating. We're dorm-mates." Jamie says looking at Jim confusingly. "Why? Why would you think that we were dating?" Jamie asks.
"Nothing. Uhh" Jim stutters trying to find an excuse. Then he cracks his neck and says the truth, "it's just that Brooke is always you know, mean and distant. But it's like she's a whole different person around you. Like when she was here with her other friends, she acted annoying, and drank way more. But with you, she acted herself, and drank less. But I don't know, sometimes my vibes are off." Jim says, while wiping a beer mug.
Brooke enters the room and sits down next to Jamie. She holds up her glass and declares, "this weekend is my best friend's birthday. So let's party!"
