Him
Luck was on my side today. I had been seated directly behind her on the plane! Too bad her friend was seated next to her or I would've been able to speak with her without him overhearing. The person she had called Kwon Chai had ended up being one of our backup dancers. He was, I grudgingly admitted, not ugly. I don't know why I resented that fact.
I vaguely knew Kwon Chai from practices with the background dancers. We had never spoken to each other outside of short congratulations to each other after performances and a few friendly hellos in the halls. He seemed nice enough from what I'd seen of him. He was well built and extremely tall, especially when standing next to Hata. His face was decently appealing if you were into that type and his reputation as an exceptional dancer was well known inside the company. Mine was better, but who was keeping track?
I sighed and stared blankly out the airplane's small passenger window. At least I had made a move before Jimin could do anything. The way he had been looking at her at the airport had made my blood boil. But now I had a new problem with this Chai character. He and Miss Hiroko were obviously close. However, I needed to figure out just how close they were before making my next move. I leaned back into my seat and tried to covertly listen in on their conversation.
"..plans?"
I frowned. It sounded too deep to be Hata's voice. I assumed it was Chai's.
"Hmm? Oh, I don't have many. Ara and Yun Duo want to go hiking and spend a few days out on the beach when we're off shift. Ara and I were planning on taking advantage of the free time to finish up a few projects for Jina, as well."
I scrunched up my face in a frown of disappointment. She hadn't had a chance to say yes yet. I'd have to get her response after we landed. I focused back on what she was saying.
"What about you and the other dancers? Are you going to stay in Hawaii with us?"
Chai shook his head. "I'm heading back to Korea after a few days to go see my family. Most of the dancers are flying back to spend the break with their families and girlfriends. I'll meet up with you and the rest of the staff in Bangkok a day or so before the concert."
The long list of announcements droned over the intercom and effectively cut off my eavesdropping. A bored flight attendant droned on about the protocol for emergencies and for take-off. I fastened my seatbelt and put in my earbuds. I cranked up the volume. Same old, same old. I had lost count how many times I had heard the flight protocols.
The plane rumbled and shuddered as it gained speed down the open runway. We angled up sharply as we finally took off. The land streaked by my window in a splotchy smear of browns, greens, and blacks. I closed my eyes and tried to forget the way Jimin and Chai had both looked at Hiroko.
I shifted in my seat, body stiff from lack of movement. I had at some point fallen asleep. I blinked my bleary eyes and yawned. What time was it? The cabin was dark and hummed with hushed whispers and the deep breaths of slumbering passengers. We must be nearly there by now.
