The next day I had found out that Keagan was kidnapped. The party hadn't worked. It only caused another missing person... and one injured...The bullet had gone through his side, only piercing through muscle and fat. He was okay. But Keagan... I didn't think she would be.
The party had cleared out before the cops and the ambulance came. Alex had been taken on a stretcher and I was the only one allowed to go with him while everyone else stayed back to be questioned. The cops knew my family well so I think the party was overlooked but I was so worried about Alex. I probably wouldn't have cared if we had gotten into trouble.
I sat next to his hospital bed as he lay there. I watched the shaky movement of his chest as he breathed. He wasn't asleep. His head was turned away from me as he looked out the window. Down below were paparazzi and reporters, anxious for their next story to include Aidan Anderson, the prodigious son of the Anderson clan, being shot. The young bachelor, taking part in half of his father's company in America while managing college, was not only shot, but by the same culprits who have been kidnapping young girls from many cities in California and Nevada.
The investigators didn't waste anytime after Alex got out of surgery. I knew the vulchers wouldn't hold off for long but couldn't they have let him recover first? I knew they needed to crack this case though. I wanted them to more than anybody. They shot my best friend and kidnapped a friend of mine. But Alex was still recovering. Questioning would be too much for him and me as well.
One thing we knew for certain was that this had to have been a group effort. It wasn't just one or two people doing the kidnapping. It had to be a group. The girls disappeared without a trace. People had their suspensions. Whispers about sex trafficking were rummaging about but I wouldn't consider it. That would mean that I would never see Keagan again and her friend was a goner too and that just couldn't be.
As night began to settle, I was the only one left in the room with Alex. I sat in the seat by the door and drew him laying there, the same way as he was before. I drew the white gown he wore and every muscle that was peeking out from under.
The last nurse had come in about 10 minutes ago. Every one of them came in flustered and excited as if they were going to accomplish something. Calling me his little sister, saying it was so sweet I stayed with him, and letting their little sticky fingers linger on my man. I had had enough of it. They even tried to feed him as if he were immobilized. I had to stay here of course to protect him. He wasn't in his well state to fend for himself. These women would surely take advantage of him if I'm gone.
I watched him wince and stared, making sure he was okay. His Adam's apple rolled down his throat and I watched it intently, etching it into my work.
"You know you can leave." I heard his hoarse voice speak.
I just watched him, taking comfort in the way the tv light flickered against him, being the only light in the room.
"I don't know why you'd even think I'd consider it." My voice was light and small but strength was in the core of it. I wasn't going anywhere.
Just then he turned his head to look at me. His eyelids were low, his lashes kissing his cheekbones. The one curl by his ear was the only one not disheveled on top of his head. His brows furrowed. "I guess my heads not right...."
We stared at each other for the longest time. I couldn't break it. He was here. Safe with me. Things could've been a lot worst and yet they weren't. I'd never felt such fear in my life. It sunk to my core and obliterated any faith I had ever felt. Finding out that he was okay was the only thing that restored my faith. I was prepared to die. I could never imagine a world without him and yet a fleeting image of the possibility had crossed my mind, in a matter of seconds, when seeing him lying on the ground, bleeding. When hearing him call out in pain. God, the sound would haunt me for as long as I lived.
