Felicity and I sat across from each other, surrounded by piles of old, dusty books. We'd been here for hours and still no luck. By now I'm sure everyone was wondering where we'd run off to. Not to mention it was almost dinner time. By the looks of it, Felicty had probably forgotten all about it. She was glaring at the pages of an old leather bound book, hastily flipping through it.
" This is hopeless!" She said as she threw the book across the room. Looking up from the interesting blue book I was reading, I lifted an eyebrow at her. She frowned, raking her nails down her face.
" We're never going to find anything in here."" So quick to give up." I said shaking my head. " Besides, I think I found something."
" Really?" She asked, her eyes alight with hope. " What?"
" Look here," I said placing the blue book in front of her. " It's a book about demons."
" Anything that can help us?" She asked as she looked over the page I was reading.
" Maybe.. I was reading about the deals they make." I said with pursed lips. " You said your father made a deal with Benjamin to wed his first born daughter with the demons son."
" Yes."
" Then they must have made a contract. Without a contract, the deal is invalid." I explained.
" So how do we find out if there is in fact a contract?" She asked.
" Do you think Benjamin would show us if we asked?"" As much as I dislike your mother, she isn't stupid." I said taking the book back from her.
" She wouldn't agree to the arranged marriage without proof of the contract."
"Great. So we're back to square one." She said slumping back into the shelf behind her.
" Not necessarily."
" Oh?"
" According to the book I was reading," I said motionong to the book. " If the contract is burned, the deal becomes invalid."
Felicity let out a delighted squeal. Despite the mound of books that separated us she leant over and wound her arms around me in a vice like grip. My face scrunched up at the close contact. She squeezed and squeezed until I was certain she'd managed to block the blood circulation.
" I. Don't. Do. Hugs." I said grimly as I squirmed in her arms.
" This is fantastic Katherine!" She said pulling away. " Now we just have to find the contract."
" Easier said than done, I'm sure." I said frowning. " Let's get to dinner, I'm starving."
" Shouldn't we pick these up?" She gestured to the piles of books scattered across the floor.
Waving my hand in dismissal I made my way towards the exit.
" No one will notice if no one comes here."" I still think we should cover our tracks." She said hesitantly. " The last thing we want is for them to catch onto what we're planning to do."
Eyes wide I stared at my beloved cousin. Did she? Did she really?
" I believe you're starting to think like me, Felicty." I said proudly placing my hand on her shoulder. " I can't believe you just used the words, cover our tracks just now."
She rolled her eyes, swatting my hand away. " Don't be rediculous."
" And an eye roll?!" I asked optimistically. " What is becoming of you?"
Laughing she hooked my arm with hers and lead me through the mess to the exit. Throughout our time spent together growing up, I'd never managed to sway Felicity to the dark side. Her confidence in our mother's rules would never deeter, she was what I called a loyal lap dog. But now, things were different. She was breaking my mother's rules, staying up after curfew and now she was even walking the halls of the restricted section in the library.
