Maya's POV

"C'mon babygirl, you have school today."
I open my eyes to see my mom sitting on my bed stroking my hair.
"Ugh mom," I groan, "why can't stay home?"
"I'm sorry hun, but Shawn and I have to work, so there's nobody here."
"I'm fifteen, mom, I can take care of myself."
"I know you can, but there's nobody here to get you anything. What happens if you fall and there's no one around to help you up?"
"I guess you're right."
"You'd better get going, I guess I'll be driving you to school for a little while."
"Okay, mom."
She helps me out of bed, and I hobble over to my closet.
"Call me if you need any help, okay?" My mom says as she closes my bedroom door.
I grab a long blue sweater and leggings out of my closet. I take my boot off— ahhhh. It feels so good to have it off, even though my ankle still aches.
I attempt to dress myself on one foot. I accidentally put my sore one down once and it hurts like hell. Other than that, I somewhat successfully managed to put my clothes on.
I put my boot back on, brush my hair, and put on a bit on mascara.
Once I finish getting ready, I grab my crutches, and head into the kitchen. My mom has made me some toast with peanut butter. I usually don't like to eat in the morning, but I appreciate that my mom is doing this for me. It makes this whole situation a little less horrible.
"Thanks for breakfast, mom," I say, "It really means a lot to me."
"Aww, anytime babygirl! I wish I could be here for you more often."
I finish my toast, put a shoe on my good foot, grab my bag, and we head out the door.
I all my years of school, I don't think I've ever dreaded going more than I am today. I wonder what Lucas did to Charlie. I hope that jerk isn't at school today.
All of a sudden, my phone buzzes. It's a text from Riley that reads:
"Peaches! Where are you?!?! Why didn't you come to my house this morning!?!?🤔😰🤨"

Riley and her emojis and excessive punctuation. I roll my eyes and smile just a little.
I text her back:

Maya: hey riles! i'm on my way to school. sorry i couldn't come over, i woke up late. i'm still not feeling great, but i'll be at school

Riley: OH THANK GOODNESS YOURE ALIVE

Maya: of course i am riles😂

Riley: Ok!! I can't wait to see you at school!!!😆🤗

After a few minutes, my mom pulls up in front of the school. Great. I was hoping that drive would last at least a little longer. I get out of the car, and get my crutches.
"You got everything?" my mom asks.
"Yeah, I'm good."
"Alright. Well, be careful, okay. I'll pick you up at ten after two."
"Okay. Bye mom."
I make my way into the school. Luckily, someone held the door for me on the way inside. I scan the busy halls for my friends, nobody seems to be around, thank goodness. Riley's probably at her locker right beside mine waiting for me.
I decide to avoid making contact with her until class starts. I don't really want to talk to anyone about my ankle yet... or ever.
I decide to just head to history class. No one was they yet... except for Mr. Matthews. I just hobble in and sit down like nothing's any different than any other day. I can tell Mr. Matthews is watching me, but I don't make eye contact. I pull out my homework and start working on it.
"So Maya," Mr. Matthews said, "Care to explain what exactly happened yesterday?"
I know that I a minute or two, everybody's going to me coming in here.
"Can we talk after class please?" I ask quietly.
"Of course," he replied.
"Can you please not make this lesson anything to do with... y'know," I ask gesturing to my cast.
"I'll try my best, okay?"
I nod.
Students were now beginning to pile in. They all stare at me. Nobody says anything— duh, they don't talk.
Farkle and Smackle walk in. Farkle looks at my ankle, then my face, then my ankle again, then faints. Smackle grabs his arm and drags him into his seat.
After a minute, Lucas and Riley come in.
"HI PEACHES HOWS IT GOING I MISS— WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR POOR FOOT?"
I sink down into my seat. Why does she have to make such a big deal about stuff like this?
"Maya? Is it broken?" Lucas asks.
"Yes," I mumble.
"OH NOOOO MY POOR PEACHES!"
Riley gives my a big hug. As much as I hate all this, I really needed a Riley hug.
"I'll be okay Riles, really," I whisper.
"Are you sure, Maya?" Lucas asks.
I nod.
That actually went a lot better than I expected.
