Chapter 23

Rainpaw leaped up to snag the hawk's wing while Featherpaw reached for the talons. She nipped the hawk's stomach, and it immediately dropped the kits and lunged for her.

"Featherpaw!" Rainpaw called.

Featherpaw looked up just as the hawk's talons closed around her side. She cried out as she was lifted off the ground. Rainpaw leaped up only for her claws to snag air. She looked up at Featherpaw as her sister got higher and higher.

"No!"

Two moons after the gathering, Skypaw and Sunhook were patrolling with Sugarleap and Fuzzytail, who had gotten their warrior names, and Grasswing, one of the senior warriors. Sunhook was leading.

The patrol was about halfway to the border when they heard a yowl from behind them. Skypaw turned her head and saw Orangepaw racing towards them. He came to a halt beside his father and mewed, "Appleleap told me to join you!"

Sunhook flicked his tail. "Very well. We are patrolling the NightClan border, and afterwards, you two can hunt."

Orangepaw nodded and stepped in beside Skypaw. Sunhook looked amused as he turned around to start moving again.

As they remarked the NightClan border, Skypaw caught two salmon while Orangepaw found some birds.

As the patrol walked back to camp, Skypaw opened her mouth to taste the air, only to find a fishy scent, but it had the scent of predator with it.

"Sunhook..?"

Sunhook turned his head, "Yes, Skypaw?"

"I smell something. It smells kinda... fishy."

Sunhook tasted the air, and immediately became tense.

Grasswing spoke first, "Everyone climb a tree. Now!"

Skypaw launched herself up the nearest tree, and she saw the rest of the patrol doing the same. When she had reached the top of the tree, she looked down to see long, scaly animals pushing through the water.

"Crocs!" Skypaw heard Sugarleap exclaim. "Oh no!"

Skypaw had heard the story about how Sugarleap's and Fuzzytail's mother was killed by a crocodile, or a croc. One bite could be fatal. Skypaw shuddered.

Suddenly, a croc lunged for the tree, hitting it with so much force that the branches shook. Skypaw felt her branch snap, and the last thing she knew was Orangepaw's horrified face as she slid down before she blacked out.
