James took me to Lena's room. She had an oxygen mask over her face and was hooked up to a heart monitor. There wasn't really anything else in the room apart from a desk and a chair next to the bed. I moved the chair so it was closer to her bed.
"She should wake up soon, she just came out of surgery so it should be a few hours."
"Thanks, James."
"It is really good to see you."
"I'm not your Kara."
"It's still amazing to hear your voice, and to see you."
"You too..." I didn't know what else to say. What do you say to someone who is from a different universe and to them you are supposed to be dead? He walked out and I looked over at my girlfriend, asleep and at peace. I suddenly felt faint and tired, realising that I had literally woken up from a light coma a few minutes ago, I sat back in my chair and let myself fall into the unconscious realm.
Lena POV
I opened my eyes slowly, allowing the light to hit them and blind me for a few seconds. When my eyes adjusted, I looked around and saw a bare hospital room with an opposite of bare woman resting her head on my lap. I pulled the mask off my face and threw it onto the desk beside the bed.
"Kara? Wake up, love."
"Lena, you're awake!" She jumped up and gave me a soft hug, then kissing me on the forehead. I smiled and ran my eyes over her perfect face. Or less than perfect at the moment, the dark circles had only formed after the Red K attack but the tired look was new.
"Are you okay? You seem very tired."
"That happens when all you can dream about is..."
"Is?"
"Nothing, just rest. I am going to go tell Alex that you are awake. She will be happy that you are okay. She was the head of surgery and was worried that she did a bad job." We both laughed and she left, coming back a few minutes later with someone I barely recognised. Why did everyone seem so different?
"Lena!" Alex ran to me and gave me a huge hug. "What's that look for?"
"You changed your hair?" Short and dark red suited her quite well.
"Like, months ago..." Her expression went from confused to happy. "Anyways, Kara is here!" She said as my girlfriend ran in. "Have you seen Alura?"
"What? Who's that?" Kara ran in and whispered something in Alex's ear. Her eyes went dark.
"Oh, you aren't our Lena?"
"Our Lena?" I repeated. Kara sat on the chair again and grabbed my hand, probably about to tell me something that was going to change everything.
"We are on Earth 38..." She looked up at me and I sighed. "And on this Earth, Supergirl is dead."
Kara POV
I told Lena the news and it seemed that she took it well. I could feel something rising in my throat, not words or tears. I ran out of the room and to the bathroom, bracing myself on the sink basin and closing my eyes and I coughed about a dozen times.
"Kara? What's going on?" Alex knocked a few times on the door and shook the handle. "Unlock the door!"
"I'm fine, just, go away!" I opened my eyes to see a basin that was once white, now covered in a pool of dark red blood.
"I am not leaving until you open this door!"
"I am fine, Alex!" I yelled, trying not to seem like anything other than what I said.
"I am going to kick the door in if you don't let me check on you!" I walked over with a huff and opened the door, trying to stop her from coming through the door. "C'mon, Kara. What are you hiding?" She pushed past me and gasped at the sight.
"It looks worse than it is."
"We found out how to get you back on your Earth but you are staying here until we can figure out what is happening."
"I don't know what is going on, Alex."
"It is the aftermath of the Red Kryptonite. She should be okay." Lena walked through the door.
"Lena, you have broken ribs and had pretty bad internal bleeding, you need to be sitting down."
"I need to be with Kara." The last words I heard as I lost all of my senses. I was suddenly on the floor but I couldn't move, or hear, or see.
(a week later)
I opened my eyes but couldn't see her. Where was Lena? Where was I? What happened?
"Where... who?" I tried to look around, wincing with every movement. All I could see was darkness. I couldn't feel anything either. My whole body was numb and the vision was black.
"Hey, Kara, slow down. Everything will be okay." Even though I couldn't see her, I would recognise that gorgeous voice anywhere.
"Lena? Where are you? Why can't I see you?"
"Alex said there were traces of regular Kryptonite in the Red K. It reached your brain before we could do anything about it and..." She went silent. I thought she had left for a second.
"And?"
"Kara, tell me, can you move?" I started crying, I felt a hand on my head. "Everything will be okay."
"No, it won't. I am paralysed and blind. This isn't okay." I could barely breathe. Why was this happening? Why was I in this position again? I was getting worked up and angry.
"With therapy, you will be able to move."
"What about seeing?" I closed her eyes tightly and then opened them again. Nothing, everything was black.
"Kara?" Alex's voice echoed from where I assumed was the doorway.
"Alex? Tell me that's you." She confirmed it, walking over and holding me. I heard her quietly crying and I started sobbing, not able to control anything, I just let myself weep in her arms. "Oh, Rao!" After what felt like a minute, she let go. "Where are we? Wait, are we still..."
"You are on Earth 38, in the DEO." She stroked my face, moving a strand of hair that was actually starting to irritate me. After an hour of chatting, she left me alone with Lena again. I started drifting off half way through the conversation.
Lena POV
Kara and I spent several more years together. After a year, she could move her arms. She remained in a wheelchair, not able to see but she could move and talk normally. It was amazing, we got married and I had a kid. The donor ended up being a hot and intelligent gentleman, Kara kept whining about how she never saw what he looked like. He paid for all of our son's schooling. When he went to live in the city for high school, his father took him in. Kara and I were left alone once again, a married couple that longed for each other's touch.
I was at work when I got the call.
"Mrs Luthor?" I recognised the voice as Winn Schott.
"Mrs Luthor is my mother. Technically I am Mrs Danvers if you want to be formal. But, call me Lena. What's up?"
"You need to get to the DEO now. Something happened with Kara." I left everything I was doing and ran to the car, speeding to the DEO and running inside.
"Where is she?" I yelled, demanding to see her. When I walked into the room I was told she was in, she was awake and looked fine.
"What's going on?" She kept asking. She looked at me in the eyes. Maybe it was a coincidence that her eyes caught mine. I walked up to her and her eyes followed me. I smiled.
"Kara, can you... can you see me?"
"Yeah, but... who are you?" Alex pulled me out of the room and told me the news that to this day still makes me feel sick.
"Kara's memories are gone."
