I woke up the next morning to a quiet house, I crawled out of bed and headed down stairs. No one was up yet, so I set the coffee pot, and looked out the window.
Emily and Edward we're sitting out on the dock with fishing poles in their hands. I smiled as I could see the giant smile on her face as her dad talked to her.
I never knew that Susan had came down the stairs until she joined me at the window, "that's where I found them most mornings when Emily was growing up."
I looked at Susan before looking back out, "she talks about both of you all the time."
The woman smiled as she poured her coffee, "lol well she talks about you all the time."
My attention grew when she said that, "I have a lot of respect for Emily. What she did for me when no one else did, she hardly even knew me, but just spending one night here I see where she got it from."
Susan sat at the table and I joined her, "well I think both of us know the truth here RJ."
I took a drink of my coffee, "and what would that be?"
She smirked, "don't try to sit there and tell me that both of y'all don't have feelings for one another. I see how quick she is to comfort you, and you for her. The only thing I don't understand is why you are both ignoring it."
I know my face held shock, "I do care for Emily yes, but I'm only 17, she's my guardian, oh and I'm her student. Plus Emily deserves someone a hell of a lot better than me."
Susan's eyes sofented, "okay let's start with number one. Age is just a number and you act more mature then that. The other two reasons could get tricky, but if y'all were careful no one would find out.
RJ you don't give yourself enough credit. Emily has told me a lot about you, and I know my daughter well enough she wouldn't lie. I don't think you give yourself enough credit."
I didn't know what to say, but thankfully the back door opened, "hey what are y'all two talking about?."
I looked at Emily, "I was just asking your mom if there was a nice place in town for breakfast, my treat."
Emily looked between me and her mom, "your still a horrible liar, but I would never turn down Miss Betty's pancakes."
Her parents town was like mine, not much to do and locally owned stores. They were right about one thing though you can not turn down Miss Betty's pancakes.
I leaned back in the booth to full to do anything else, "man I'm gonna have to work out an extra two hours to burn that off."
Everyone started laughing as Miss Betty came to the table, "well Emily it looks like you found yourself a girlfriend that can finally beat you at eating pancakes."
We both looked at each other quickly, before Emily corrected her, "she's not my girlfriend miss Betty."
The old woman looked at both of us, "could have fooled me, you two have been over here giggling like high school lovers."
I looked at Susan quickly who winked at me, and I could see Emily blushing. I went to hand Betty my credit card, but she just shook her head, "this one's on me."
Later that afternoon Susan and Emily wanted to go shopping, Edward and I decided to stay back and watch some of the football games.
After the girls left Edward walked in with two beers and offered me one, I gave him a confused look and he just shrugged his shoulders, "one or two won't hurt you kiddo."
I chuckled at his comment, and accepted the beer. After watching some of the game I realized where Emily's love of sports came from.
"So RJ what are your plans after high school."
