Prologue

Grayfur stood beside Dapplestar. Dapplestar's eyes were low as she was getting close to talking to her deputy, Grayfur. Grayfur hoped she didn't find out her secret. She walked to Dapplestar's side and asked, "What do you need?"

"Grayfur, I-I talked to our medicine dog earlier," Dapplestar choked out. It was obviously hard for her to say. As she spoke Grayfur tensed.

"What did Redfang say?" she asked Dapplestar. By the name of the medicine dog Dapplestar had looked up.

"W-well she said th-that you are going to have pups," Dapplestar finally qgot the words out. "Is it true?"

I forgot to talk to Redfang. What do I tell Dapplestar though? Grayfur thought. Then said what she needed to. "I am. I am so sorry I didn't tell you. I didn't know what to do."

"You can't have pups while being deputy..." Dapplestar seemed so sad and confused.

"I must be deputy!" She spat back.

Dapplestar thought a minute. "You will have to give up your pups." she said quietly as she tried to make a straight face.

Dawntail enter the leader's den then said, "I heard everything. I think I can help you... I will take your pups Grayfur."

"Can I at least name the first one?" Grayfur asked and Dawntail nodded. "The youngest pup shall be Mysterypup."
