He was the only one not surrounding Mysteryheart. He picked out some fresh-kill and went to eat by the leader's cave. Dawntail was with her, and they were talking. He wanted to eavesdrop really bad.

Bearpaw pricked his ears. "Don't pay any attention to Mysteryheart or she'll find out!" the leader scolded Dawntail.

"I don't care if she finds out," the warrior snapped. "I'm going to tell Sunstorm soon anyway. You know what he'll do when he finds out?"

Graystar growled at her. "You won't tell them I'm their mother!!!"

Bearpaw froze. What is she talking about? Dawntail gave birth to them, right? he asked himself.

Wishing he didn't hear what he just had, he lifted his body. Dawntail stalked off like someone put dirt in her fresh-kill. He went to see what Graystar was talking about.

"Graystar," he began. The leader slowly turned to him. "I uh..... I overheard your conversation. And I'm sorry. What do you mean Mysteryheart and Sunstorm are your pups?"

The leader froze. Her eyes blazed with disbelief. "Come to my den. We can't discuss this here."

He followed the leader into the den. Bearpaw had never been in her den. She turned to him once more. "Okay. Before I tell you anything, you mustn't tell Mysteryheart or Sunstorm."

"Yes Graystar," he agreed obediently.

"I gave my pups up for becoming leader. At that time I was deputy. My name was Grayfur." she explained. "Dapplestar, the leader before me, told me that I couldn't have pups and be deputy."

Bearpaw couldn't help blurting out, "Why?!?"

Graystar gave him a hard stare. "I would have to be a queen. Dapplestar told me she found out by Redfang. The former leader told me it was the Clan or my pups. Dawntail was by the door listening, and told us she could help."

Bearpaw didn't understand. "Why doesn't she act like she is Mysteryheart's mother then?"

"I named Mysteryheart and Dawntail named the others. I suppose she wanted to name the last one, but since they were my pups I chose the last one's name." she explained.

The apprentice was shocked. "Don't tell them, okay?" he nodded and left her den.
