I closed the car door gently, as not to disturb the sleeping babies in the back. Turning to the side, I made eyes contact with Casey, breathing a short sigh of relief.
"We've done it." I sighed, glancing back at the 4 booster seats. We both sat in silence for a moment, soaking up every detail of this new reality. "Now, lets take 'em home."
The drive was short and pleasant, words I could not use to describe the excruciating trauma I'd just experienced.
We held two babies each, holding our breaths as not to wake them.
Once inside and assured of the boys' well beings I collapsed in my chair, allowing my eyes to flutter shut.
My slumber was soon disturbed however, by the wailing of an infant. Sighing internally, I reluctantly parted from the warmth of the armchair, heading for the nursery to fetch the screaming newborn.
What I hadn't realised was that when one baby cries, it triggers the others. Seconds later, the shrieks of four infants echoed along the halls.
They soon shrank to bitter blubbers when I entered the nursery, followed by multiple whines as I picked up a single child.
"Alright Raphael, what the cause for all the disturbance?" I sighed, knowing he was too young to understand my words.
I sunk into the day bed next to the cots, resting my head on the plush pillow as Raph nuzzled into me.
The protesting of the others soon ceased once they were satisfied that their eldest brother was safe.
"You guys are quite a noisy bunch aren't you." I murmured, once again closing my eyes, comforted by the small steady breaths of the boys.
