CHAPTER 17

"ARE YOU OUTTA YOUR MIND?" Mr. Tolu barked to me as we got down from the van at the DUA.
"What were you thinking going out there to play vigilante like that dude in Lagos?" He paused and gestured outside like he was expecting me to answer a rhetorical question.
"ANSWER ME!" he yelled. So he was serious bout me answering a rhetorical question.

"You're not my dad and definitely not my mum. I. Don't. Answer. To. You." The latter I said turning and staring him in the face with all bravery. Well, of course, he was shook. He calmed down. Exhaled and put his hand on my shoulder which I shook off.

"For your safety, I hope it's the tragedy that's talking. Because if that's how you see it, you might just force us to choose between making you a liability or an asset. And trust me, you don't wanna be a liability. Go to your quarters and think about this... Very carefully." He said and left me there. I stood there trying to consider me options. I could just leave now and probably live under a bridge without food or Wi-Fi or I could stay and get free food and Wi-Fi. The latter was chosen of course and I went to settle down in my room reminiscing my adventures and missing my mum. Yeah, I slept off.

"I'm out. I'm not working with you again."

"Hahahahahha. Really? That's your big speech huh?"

"Just let him be, he's suffered enough. It's okay."

"You can't just pull out, I own you. You're my asset and, it was never about your choices."

"Then, I'll reveal your location to the boy and he will come here and destroy you."
*laughter*
"No. way. You're too funny. What if he like found out about, I dunno know, how his ma... Died or who killed her? Now get out of my sight and do your job"

I was awoken the next day by a loud horn. Like SpongeBob has. All of my body was wide awake. Drove me nuts tho. Then I heard a voice over the speaker.

"Trix, simulation room in twenty."

I was not gonna be woken up to training.

"And don't think of going back to bed or I'll drown you in that room."
came the voice again like it read my mind.

"Drown me in my own room? Pfft I'd like to see you try" I said under my breath and laid back down. Just immediately, the place was reinforced with metal walls and water started gushing in from the vents above.
"OK, I'm coming already. Shut off the water." I said coming down from my bed but the water didn't stop.

"Guys, guys..." At this moment I was panicking and fretting like a kid. I materialized two bars and repeatedly struck against the wall... To no avail of course. The water kept gushing in. I tried harder. Nothing. I was running out of air space. The water was reaching up to my chest. I materialized a platform and elevated myself above the water. I jumped off the platform and made a cocoon around myself and landed on the water. I felt engulfed by water and soon started coming down gently as the water flushed away. I dematerialized the cocoon and got myself ready and left for the simulation room.

"That was really unnecessary" I told my handler as I got there. He shrugged and started the simulation.

I was surrounded by soldiers, of the simulation of course. I was training for maybe three hours with short breaks. Ogbuefi was training me harder than usual without using any words other than, 'Again' 'start' 'stop'. I had to take a longer break.

"What's with the eternal training?" I said to him. He turned off the machine and got on the platform with me.

"Why do you want to ruin the Agency and get yourself killed simultaneously?" He answered folding his arms against his chest
"I don't want to ruin anything, I just want to help people and..."

"AND WHAT TRIX?" He said cutting me off. "And play messiah?" He continued, unfolding his arms. "It's this same kind of messiah complex your dad had that got him killed!"

Those words shot me. My mum told me my dad died of gastrointestinal cancer.

"YOU'RE LYING!" I blurted out and picked up my jacket. I had a date, I couldn't let him ruin it. As if reading my mind, he called out to me.

"Don't even go on that... Date. She shouldn't know your secret identity"

I stopped, chuckled and left.

I went to the hanger and the taxi pulled up by me and I waved him off and decided to use a public vehicle instead. I flagged down a taxi. There was a nicely dressed woman in it. She wore a yellow gown topped with a red leather jacket and carried a blue velvet purse, had all-gold jewellery- probably pure gold. I got in and said my destination. Soon enough we got into a traffic jam and nice lady started a conversation.

"Traffic jams in this state. Bad roads. What do you think?" She turned to me and me, being all nice and crap, I replied.

"I think street thugs and poor driving" and I looked away.

"You know there are things worse than traffic jams? Terrorists, wars, robberies, and best of all, there's death." She said death and best in the same sentence. This woman is crazy. I gradually materialized a small knife on my palm, hidden from her in case she wanted to try any nonsense. "Death's very dangerous, but what is more dangerous is the bringer of these deaths."

"What do you want?" I asked her in a low growl.

"Nothing really. No need to fret." The latter she said waving her hand and adjusting her sitting position. By now, the road was free and we started moving. "I just wanted to know you before you die... Like your mother." She had called up a sleeping dragon. I materialized a shield and charged at her but she vaporized and imploded into a flat cylinder as thick as two regular fingers and started ticking. I picked it up and turned it to its flip side and I saw a count down.
