Heidi came running in hours later to find Evan was still asleep in his hospital bed. At some point Connor had found his way onto the small frame, with limbs entangled in Evan's and his body pressed up against the sleeping boy. Heidi rushed into the hallway; eager to find out what happened. Eventually she found a call button and seconds later, a knock appeared at the door. She gave Connor a gentle push and he jolted awake, dazed and confused from lack of sleep. He hopped down from the bed as the doctor entered.

"And you must be Heidi. Pleasure to meet you! I'm just gonna tell you the same thing I told Connor. The type of sleeping pills Evan took are severely toxic to his liver. We were, fortunately, able to take out the majority but he will most likely need a liver transplant. He's in a coma right now, but judging by his current stats, he should wake up within the next hour or so."

"O-Okay um. How much does... how much would that cost? The liver transplant," Heidi spoke, a twinge of fear in her expression.

"Well, it depends on the donor and the health of the liver. I can see where he is on the list; we'll discuss it from there."

"Okay th-thank you." The doctor left the room and Heidi's head fell into her hands. She started to sob, her body rocking back and forth in time with the heart rate monitor. Connor felt awkward and nervous, as if no move was the right move. Heidi spoke through a sob, "I can't pay."

"What?" Connor whispered, unsure of what she said.

"I'm behind on the bills. Electricity's out at home... I c-can't pay." Her body heaved and then collapsed in on itself as she tried to find air. "He's gonna die. He's gonna die he's gonna die he's gonna-"

"I can pay," Connor said impulsively, immediately regretting it. His body grew warmer. He wondered if it showed on his face. "I can- we can pay. My family. We'll get him the liver."

Heidi looked at him with tears in her eyes, smiling and falling into his arms. "Thank you, Connor. You have no idea how much you've done for us." Connor just held her there, staring off into the distance as if his life had been put on pause. Evan tried to kill himself. His Evan. The Evan with the freckles and the soft hands he never knew where to place. Evan with the sad smile and scarred forearms and the blonde hair and the eyes that lit up whenever he smiled. "I n-never knew. I never had a clue."

     "He never told you."

"I should've known," she sighed, sitting up. Just as she wiped her eyes, Evan's eyes fluttered open.
