I hear a knock at the door. I hadn't moved from my position, I'd been here for a couple hours. I tried to be quiet and wait to hear his footsteps slowly retreat. Hoping he would leave. I didn't want him to see me like this. Another knock. "Mystery Girl, open up. I know you're in there I can hear you breathing. Please let me in." He says softly.
I stand up and wipe the tears from my face, but there's no way he wouldn't notice that I'd been crying. I was done hiding. I thought about telling him to go away. I needed him now. I open the door, slowly. I stand there, letting it sink in, his realisation of the state of me has him looking like a concerned parent. He lets himself in and shuts the door. "Kate." He looks at me. I open my mouth, but no words can find a way to explain this. So I shut it. Suddenly he's pulled me in and I can smell him on his grey Tshirt. I let myself go. And I begin crying again. I break down and fall, he catches me, and we both sit there on the floor, him holding me. "It's okay. Shhhh. It's okay." He whispers in my ear. "I'm here now." He gently pats my head. I sigh. I contain myself. I look into his eyes. "How is it you still look so beautiful?"
"You're just saying that."
"No I mean it. Mystery girl. What happened?" He asks gently. "I understand if you don't want to talk about it."
I search his eyes for reassurance and I find it. I feel safe in his arms. "Broken promises." I say.
He nods. And we both fall asleep in a heap, together.
