I watched from afar from the very back corner of the cafe. "Young man. I've asked to meet with you concerning my daughter."
"Katie?."
"Yeah. I believe there was a misunderstanding. You see, I'm her father. I left her a long time ago. And I'm back, trying to make things right. She must've assumed you tried to go behind her back to see me or something along those lines. She knows she was wrong. I only want the best for Katie. She has always been my little girl. I don't want to see her unhappy. You make her happy. So please treat her right. And give my baby a second chance. She deserves that.""Mr... uh."
"Mr Lowe, but call me Jonathan."
"Okay, Jonathan, I'll speak to her. I want what's best for her too. So just a word of advice. We both have second chances. I suggest neither of us screw it up."
I leave the cafe and I wait outside until the store closes. Twiddling my thumbs.
As soon as he steps forward I catch him before he can make the next move.
"Thomas!" I wave in his face.
"Katie." He breathes. "Look, I'm..."
"No, let me speak first. Please." He makes a hand gesture "The floor is yours."
"I want to say how terribly sorry I am for assuming the worst. I was wrong. And I shouldn't have been mad. Whenever I see my dad I just get so angry. And I shouldn't have taken in out on you. I shouldn't have thought those things about you and I'm sorry for accusing you of something you didn't do. I had no place to comment on that. I'm sorry.""Thank you. I understand. I appreciate you coming here and apologising. That really hurt Katie, you know I'd never do that to you. If I was going to I wouldn't go behind your back."
"I like you Tom. I don't wanna ruin what we have."
"What do we have, mystery girl?"
"We have each other. Don't we?"
He blinks, and stares at me blankly. Then his lips curl into a smile.
"Katie." He pulls me into his chest, his hands wrapped around my head.
Then he gently grabs the sides of my face and looks me dead in the eye. "I love you. I don't wanna screw this up.""Thomas. I love you too." I repeat my words, as they so effortlessly fall out of my mouth. "I love you Coffee shop boy." I sigh. We kiss. Everything around me doesn't matter. It's like we're the only two people here. It was love. It was us. The way he treated me with care and affection lit an energy inside me that I hadn't felt for a long time. We pull away. He smirks. "What?" I say. He pulls a leaf from my hair as the wind blows gently whistling in my ears.
"How do I deserve you?" He says.
"Oh you big cheese ball." I say.
"It's true Katie."
"Cheers bro." I just realised what I had said.
Did I just say bro? Out loud?
"Did you just call me bro?"
"Whaaaat who said that? Race you to the end of the street I say." And I'm off running before he can think.
"Wait up crazy!!" I hear him shout behind me.
"Embrace your inner child Thomas. It's how you feel alive!"
"I feel unfit!" He says catching up to me.
"I'm gonna have to train you up if you're gonna come jogging with me."
"What?" He says shockingly.
"We start 6am tomorrow."
"You're joking." He laughs.
"Nope."
"Oh shit."
