I called Tom a total of 9 times, and left behind two voice messages. I knew he wouldn't answer. But there's someone else who would. "UGH." I dreaded that thought, but it was my only chance.
I dial the number.
"Before you say anything, I'm not doing this for you. But I need this from you. You told me you'd do anything for me. Here's a way to start." I hear a pleasant sigh of relief on the other end."What is it? Are you okay Katie?"
"Well, I've ruined my chances with that guy at the cafe. I've been seeing him, sort of. Anyway we aren't official and if he leaves me I don't know where to go. I'll have nothing left Dad, and I'll be back where I started. I need you."
"What do you need me for? I understand that this boy is everything to you right now, but are you sure he's worth all this fussing over?"
"Dad, I wouldn't be calling if it wasn't this important. So yes, he is worth it. I need you to go in and speak to him please. Tell him that you left me and that's why I'm so messed up."
Silence. He's hurt by my words. He's hurt by the truth.
"Okay. I'm trying to do better Katie."
"I know you are. I, please. Just tell him that then. That you're trying to fix your past mistake."
"I'll do it on one condition."
"I don't think...." he cut me off.
"Meet me for coffee, just the two of us. I want to get to know my daughter."
"Fine. One coffee. That's it."
"That's all I ask."
"Good."
