"I'm coming, I'm coming." Julia said rushing to the door.
She opened it. Standing in front of her was her mother. Julia stood as stiff as a rock, holding the gaze of her mother, who slightly older, looked the same as the day she left her.
Her mother smiled, coffee stained teeth showing. "Hi baby girl! Miss me?"
Before Julia could say a word her mother pushed passed her. "Nice place ya got here. Must be making the big doe now."
Still shocked, Julia shut the door. "Baby, who was that?" Sara had come from the room now fully dressed.
Julia tried to speak and couldn't make a word.
"I'm sorry, my daughter is so rude. Hi, I'm Kathleen, Julia's mother."
"Hi, I'm Sara."
Julia shook her head, coming back to reality. She couldn't believe after all of these years her mother decided to come back into her life.
"Mom." she said, the word hardly forming on her lips.
"Yea baby doll." her mother replied.
"Wh..what are you doing here?"
"Well sweetie, I heard about your father's death and I just had to check on my baby."
Julia felt the anger rising within her. "Check on your baby?"
"Yes silly. A young woman needs her mother during a time like this."
Before she knew it, Julia exploded. "CHECK ON YOUR BABY! Where you checking on me after you left? Where you my parent when dad worked countless hours to provide for me. My high school graduation, college or law school!" Julia felt the blood rushing to her face.
"Now you wait a minute!" Kathleen replied. "I am still your mother! Didn't your father teach you respect. Yelling at me in front of this young lady."
"My father taught me way more than you ever did." Julia's voice a bit calmer. Sara walked to Julia putting a space between the two women.
"Julia, calm down." Sara's voice filled with fear. She had never seen Julia like this.
"GET OUT!" Julia yelled.
Her mother walked to the door, stopping to Sara. "she's just like her father. Better watch out." she left shutting the door behind her.
"Julia, what happened." Sara asked.
"Why now? Who told her she has that right? What kind of mother does that." Julia said pacing the living room.
Sara went up to her, stopping her in her tracks. "Baby, sit down please." Sara said, worry now replacing her fear. "Tell me what's going on."
"When I was five, my mother left. She didn't leave a note or anything. I was alone until my father came home that night. I haven't seen her since. Twenty-one years and she just pops up. My father has been dead for three years and it take her this long."
Sara could see the anger coming back into Julia's face. Julia got up and walked to the patio. Sara followed.
"No," Julia said "I need sometime to myself." She walked away leaving Sara with such hurt. Not for herself but for Julia and what she was going through.
