Birthday

(Konner's POV)

Today is my tenth birthday.

I am currently sitting in the dining room, waiting on my mother to bring in my birthday cake. The rest of my family also sat around the table, carrying on their own conversations. I am not paying attention to what they were talking about because I am so excited that I'm turning ten. Especially since my father told me that this was a very special birthday for me. I had no idea what he meant by that, but I am hoping that he will finally let me start practising my magic.

Yes, I know what I am. A warlock. My father had told me that I inherited that from Esther, my grandmother. I never met her, or my grandfather, but I was curious to what they were like. Every time I would bring up the subject to one of my family members, they would just say the same boring thing, 'They died a long time ago' and change the subject.

I haven't met anyone from my mother's side of the family. When I ask her why, she makes a strange face and quietly tells me that they live far away. I also knew that all of my family members, including my mom and dad, were vampires.

My Uncle Klaus was not only a vampire, but a werewolf too; a hybrid. Speaking of Uncle Klaus, I am the closest to him out of all of my uncles and Aunt Rebekah. He is there for me just like mother and father are. I guess we are a lot alike.

My parents look at us strangely whenever we are together; like they are worried for some reason. I often find myself wondering why they look this way. Did something happen? Aside from this, I am also close to Uncle Kol, but not as much as Uncle Klaus.

Aunt Bekah usually  picked out and bought all of my clothes, wanting me to be her dress-up doll, so I usually try to stay away from her when I could. Uncle Finn and I never really talked; I don't know why. I guess we just don't click.

My thoughts were interrupted when everyone started singing 'Happy Birthday'. I turned my head and smiled to find my mom bringing me a large, dark blue birthday cake that had 'Happy Birthday Konner' written in cursive on the top. That's one of the things about my family; they had money and could get whatever they wanted.

When everyone finished singing, my mother placed the cake in front of me and kissed the top of my head and whispered, "Happy Birthday, sweetie." I blew out the ten candles and everyone clapped. My father stood up from his seat left of me, stood behind me, and bent down to give me a hug, "Happy Birthday, my son."

"Awww..Elijah and Konner don't move! I have to get a picture!" Aunt Bekah squealed like a little girl as she pulled out her phone and took some pictures.

"Now I'm getting in," my mom demanded as she came closer to us, and stood beside my father.

I groaned, "More pictures?"

Everyone laughed, except Aunt Bekah who stated simply, "Yes, and if you keep complaining, I'll take more and more."

I groaned once again. Everyone laughed at my being impatient. Then my father jokingly spoke, "You better listen to your aunt, or we'll be here all day. She might even make us dress up."

Aunt Bekah smiled, "Ooo...good idea, brother!"  I stared wide-eyed at what my father said and after a few minutes, put on the best smile I could make. I did NOT want to dress up.

When she was finally done, I sighed of relief. After we finished the party, my mother and Aunt Bekah went shopping. Uncle Finn went with them. Uncle Klaus and Uncle Kol told my father that they were going out.

Before they got out the door, I ran over to them, "Can I go with you?" I asked them. They didn't answer me, they just looked behind me. I turned around to see that my father was standing behind me, exchanging looks with them. Uncle Kol spoke up, looking at my father, "We're going out for a...drink," making the last word very stressed.  I turned to look at my father again, who was nodding, and came up beside me, pulling me closer to him.

"We will be back soon mate. I give you my word," Uncle Klaus said while now looking at me. I just nodded. when they left, I looked up at my father, who was also looking down at me smiling.

"What would you like to do, Konner?" my father asked me. I just shrugged, "Can we take a walk through the city?"

My father was silent for a few seconds and replied, "Konner, I don't think that is the best idea right now-"

I cut him off, "Father, please? You'll be with me."

He sighed and gave in, " I suppose you are right, but do you give me your word that you will not leave my sight? And you must not let people acquire your name, for they cannot discover who you are."

I quickly nodded my head, "I give you my word, father," and asked, "Why can't people know who I am?" My father stared straight ahead and responded quietly, "I will tell you when you reach of age. For now, just trust me and do what I say. Understand?"

I nodded and silently wondered why people couldn't know who I am.
