I woke up and the first thing I noticed was that my hands were bound and that I wasn't alone.
The second thing was that I wasn't in an FAC holding cell (I had been in enough of those). I sure as hell wasn't in Babble tower. The room was warm and lavishly decorated. Everything was in royal blue and gold.
In front of me was a mahogany desk with a rose expertly carved into it.
A single rose was the sign of the Serpent, a blue flag with a gold rose embellished onto it could be seen flying proudly above the Knowledge Dome.
Sitting behind the desk was the face that had haunted my dreams. Adam Eden, but he wasn't the only one there, standing behind him with a hand firmly clamped onto his shoulder was his wife. Standing behind them was their daughter Clara.
All three were simply staring at me in silence, Clara was the first to notice my new found consciousness, she quickly nudged her father with a nod towards me.
He looked at me silently for a moment longer "Ah Ruth, your awake."
Ruth is my cover name, everyone in Exodus has one. Ruth Goodman is the name on the ID I carry and there is also a Ruth Goodman living in the apartment next to mine and Maia's. This means that if anybody ever comes looking for someone called Ruth then is was time for Maia to panic.
"Tell me Ruth, how long have you live in this world?"
That was a strange way to ask my age but I answered anyway. "Almost nineteen years."
Eve's face took on a confused look, "but you do not look past you eighteenth year how is that possible?" Her musical voice seemed to seep into my mind making me want to tell her my every secret.
"Because I was born here, like everyone else."
Clara Eden's soft void floated to my ears from the corner in which she stood, "I can't get a read on her thoughts or feel any brain activity at all for that matter," she looked at me curiously for a moment "it's like she isn't alive."
I began to panic as all three of the Edens looked at me with curious eyes. How could I have overlooked this? If they were from the first world them they would have supernatural powers.
It was obvious what Eve's power was, with her musical voice and talent for public speaking she had the power of persuasion, she could make people think how she wanted them to. Clara could read minds but not change how they think like her mother if I was correct. That only left Adam Eden, what was his power?
"What are you?" Adams' sharp voice pulled me out of my musings.
"I am human." I answered simply, proud of myself for keeping my voice steady.
"So this isn't you?" He took out a remote and pointed to the woo panelled wall opposite his desk. The panels split apart and a flat screen T.V appeared behind it.
It clicked on a it was a close up of myself and officer Humphrey at the station today. You clouding hear anything but I could see him reach for the radio then to me convincing his not to.
"So what if it is?"
He jumped out of his chair and was about to mow towards me when Eve put her hand on his shoulder, halting him in his tracks.
"Come now Ruth, you are among friends, you own people you need not lie to us. Just tell us who you are and we will help you."
Her voice reached inside my head, pushing me to believe her. It almost worked, almost. Just before I was about to agree, what connection she has with my brain snapped and I could think properly again I went with the safer route and remained silent, looking at the plush royal blue carpet.
