Down we went into the depths of the tomb with only the flickering light coming from James' flickering torch to light the way. The air smelled like damp sand and wet stone, walls of damp yellow stone surrounded us as we sank down into the bowels of the earth.
Cracks webbed out on the sandy walls and floor was dotted with small potholes, looking like remnants of some long forgotten war. There seemed to be a tension in the air, something was pushing us away from this place.
"We shouldn't be here." I turned to see Naomi, a frown etched upon her features.
"I know." looking out into the murky darkness outside of the small ring light that James' small torch provided I felt a chill pass through me, " but we have to. They can't find it before us, if they do then everything we've fought for has been for nothing." Even I could hear the desperation that was edging into my voice.
We walked on until the ground levelled out and the potholes ceased, who or what had caused them had obviously not made it this far. As we walked dust was rose up in great smoky, clouds. That had to be a good sign, hopefully that meant no one had been here in a while. I couldn't find any signs of life, even spiders seemed avoid this place.
James' torch gave a final weak flicker of light before going out, plunging us into darkness. James let out a loud curse, "I was sure that I changed the batteries."
Naomi let out a loud sigh, "well it would seem that you didn't. As usual you didn't bother and now it's effecting the mission."
I shook my head at Naomi, she looked as if she was about to say something but I cut her off before she could begin, "I really don't want to know."
Walking up in front of where James and Naomi stood I felt something in the air move. They began to squabble about something insignificant again, "hey, guy shut up for a second."
"Why?"
Turning away from them I tried to see past the darkness but there was nothing except for the same small, damp corridor.
A light breeze ruffled my hair. There shouldn't be a breeze... "Get behind me, both of you." My voice sounded calm but I could feel an irrational panic grip hold.
"Why?"
"Just do it!" I snapped. Both of them scurried behind me without further complaint.
The breeze began to pick up and the pendant around my neck grew hot, turning away I closed my eyes and tried to calm my erratic heartbeat. Naomi sucked in a breath as a soft light lit the hallway once more.
"You should not be here." The low, angry voice filled the small space. My head snapped up, but there was no one there.
"Leave mortals, while you still can."
"Where are you? Show yourself?" I couldn't keep the quiver out of my voice.
The light grew until I had to turn away, whenever the light dimmed again a man stood in the corridor, his tattered cloak flapping in a non-existent wind.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Malakai and I am the guardian of this place." he looked at each of us in turn before his dark eyes landed on me, "they told me about you Valery Freeman." His voice was hard.
When he looked at me he seemed to fade at the edges, it was like he wasn't really there. His eyes in particular scared me, if you looked directly at them, they were hollow, just empty sockets. He didn't look alive.
His clothes were out of style. He wore a long, sweeping cloak and a plain white shirt with matching breeches, he looked like he had been plucked out of a bygone era and put here.
I looked from Naomi to James, both of them had a worried look on their face. "Who told you?" I tried to push some of the Genesis File's power into my voice and it seemed to work. The man's face softened for a moment but he quickly shook his head.
"Don't use you witchcraft on me mortal!"
"Then tell you who else you have seen." I reasoned.
He looked torn for a moment before lifting a frail shoulder, "I didn't catch their names but they all wore a uniform."
I felt my blood freeze, "was it green and black?"
He nodded, "and they told me, that under no circumstances should I let you in."
This was it, game over. The Serpent had beaten us here.
"It's over Valery, we have to go and warn Jacob." James sounded defeated.
"I know, I just can't believe we lost." An idea suddenly hit me, "you're the scholar, from the story aren't you?"
"I am," his voice held a smug quality.
"So you're the guardian of the book?"
He smiled, "yes and do not think for a moment I will let you steal it." His voice had a dark edge and the air around us grew cold.
"Then why would you let them take it, if it's so important?"
"They told me that you would..." There was a sudden shift in the air, I felt a sharp pull in the pit of my stomach. "Treachery! They have tried to touch the book." He began to glow once again, there was a cold wind and he was gone, taking the light with him and plunging us into darkness once more.
Simultaneously we all began to sprint up the dark corridor, stumbling and tripping on the uneven stone slabs.
We ran in the dark for what felt like hours until we began to hear frantic shouting and a soft light appeared in front of us.
I stumbled to a halt, James and Naomi crashing into the back of me making us all fall to the grimy floor. "Why'd we stop?" Naomi panted, "not that I'm complaining."
I pushed my hand out in front of me until it hit a coarse wooden barrier, there's was a door there.
"Shut up," I hissed. "Can't you hear that?"Just as I spoke a low scream pierced the silence making us jump. "Oh that. I heard that."
James and Naomi both took out their guns, "Ready?" James had a crazy smile on his face as placed one hand on the small door in front of us.
"Let's go."
