You sat against a tree and listened. At this point there wasn't a lot you weren't willing to bring home. All your people needed to know was that they were eating meat. Being the butcher's daughter, you knew how to skin and cure meat in the cruelest of conditions, so if you were to bring home many smaller animals and tell them they were a big one, nobody would notice.

"Who's out here?" A woman asked and you held your breath, drawing your bow and checking for your knife. "I know somebody is here, I saw you earlier. It's not safe to hunt here, there are beasts."

"If there are beasts, my people will feast." You said revealing yourself.

"Not the kind you can just hunt." She said and you lowered your weapon. "Come with me and I will show you a place you can find easier food."

"I do not know you, surely if you knew who I was, you would not be helping me." You said and she put her hands at her side. "It's awfully kind of you to be helping a stranger."

"I do not care if you are an outcast." She said and you heard a growl. "However, if you wish to stay out here and die, I will not stop you."

"Show me the place where the hunt may go on." You said and she smiled, offering you her hand. The two of you ventured further east, going into what you'd been told was no man's land. "This is where the beasts feed."

"Those are children's tales." She said and you took out your knife. She began to climb and tree, stopping halfway though and glancing at you with amusement. "Come on, it's safer to hunt up here."

"Children's tales my ass." You muttered under your breath  as you climbed up after her. "What is your name?"

"Niylah." She said and you kissed her hand. "You have yet to tell me yours stranger."

"Y/n." You said and she looked impressed. "What, have you heard of me?"

"The mad butcher's daughter." She said, an amused smirk on her face. "Hunter of Predators. You've worked up quite the reputation."

"The hunt makes me feel like a part of something." You said and she nodded. "Besides, if I do not hunt, the people would shun me."

"I would not shun you." Niylah said and you smiled at her. "I'd even hunt with you, share my connections with you even."

"Perhaps." You said and Niylah's eyes darted down at the sound of a twig snapping. You drew your bow with impressive speed and shot an arrow into the skull of a small mountain beast. "If there was one, there are more."

"Exactly, it'd be a feast for everybody." You said and Niylah gave you a surprised look.

"It is reckless to stay here with foreign beasts out in unknown forests." Niylah said and you jumped from the tree and look at the beast. She followed you, helping you carry it. "Take it back with me, I can ask somebody who might now why they've ventured this far down."

"Perhaps it has become too cold for them in the mountains." You said and Niylah gave you an unamused look. "This is my ticket home, I will not sacrifice everything because a pretty stranger fears I can not survive a hunt."

"The hunt isn't worth your life." Niylah said and you gave her a confused look. "They don't deserve a hunter like you. If you just come with me, I'll help you. You'll be a hunter they talk about all the way in Polis. You'll know this world like the back of your hand. I've got maps, books, and all types of stuff."

"A hunter does not learn from books, a hunter learns from the hunt." You said and Niylah put her hand on your cheek. She kissed you softly and you nearly fell backwards over the carcass.

"Well a good hunter knows when to cut their losses, they know when that you can't learn if you don't have a starting place." Niylah said and you felt her put her forehead against yours. "Come with me, let me be your starting place."

"O-okay." You said and Niylah kissed you once more, this time pulling away in a smile.
