The next day he waved at me and I waved back. I hadn't done that in a while. The rest of the day passed by like it usually did, quick and quiet. With a few waves to Jake and a "hi" or "What do you have next?" but thankfully nothing much.
I didn't get how everyone still had so much to talk about, nothing ever happened in Brady lake. But somehow the gossipers never had enough time to talk about everything whatever that was. Rumors ran around the school some were about me. And I heard every one of them. One was about how my Aunt thought I was crazy and was scared to be around me. There was one about me killing my family and my brother running away because he found out. They even said that I had killed my brother too and the police just hadn't found the body yet. By now I wouldn't be surprised if I found out that everyone was scared of me with those rumors running around. One of the queen gossipers was my old friend, Shay. I stopped talking to her like the rest of my friends but now I really wish I hadn't.
That evening I got a call from an unknown number. I know it's not something you should ever do but I answered the call.
"Auralia, you won't believe what just happen-"
"How did you get my phone number?" I asked cutting him off.
"That doesn't matter right now. Shay went missing!"
"What! How? Where?"
"I was at a party when suddenly we couldn't find her. We went searching for her before eventually, someone called the police. When they came everyone had to go home so I don't know anything else. But when we looked for her we couldn't find her coat, or bag and her friends are positive she didn't have them before."
"So, what do you think happened to her?" I asked ignoring the other questions swimming in my head. Why are you telling me? How did her "friends" not notice she was gone? Where was she last? And so much more I didn't ask because he was excited and if I was excited to it wouldn't be a very nice phone call.
"I think she was kidnapped or something. Like I said I don't know for sure though." He answered emphasizing the "think".
"Ok. Ok. I'll see if I can find out anything.Which I probably won't."
" So it'll be like we're working together on a mystery?"
I rolled my eyes at that comment but answered "Sure." and hung up.
I then started walking around my apartment. What had just happened? This was the place where nothing ever happened. Much less a disappearance or kidnapping. I ended up walking into my parent's old bedroom and started pacing in the room. Too involved in my thinking I didn't see where I was going and knocked over a folder on their desk. I picked it up and looked at the name written on it, "Kids Cards" Despite everything I smiled and even though my mind told me I had more important things to do I looked through the old cards. One card poked through so I took it out of the pile and looked at it. There were only two typed words across a small white piece of paper "We know" The words were in Arial font and there was nothing really scary about it yet I felt a shiver run down my spine. What. Even. My hands started violently shaking and threatened to rip apart the paper. All of my thoughts started pounding in my head.Shay, where? Who sent it? Why didn't I know? How do I help? What am I supposed to do? There must be something I can do, right? What.What.What...What...........What...........what..... And the last thing I felt was a crisp sheet before it all went blank.
