dan's pov

pj met me outside the door as i walked out. "hey." i nodded.

"so when did you and phil start dating?" he asked.

"we're not dating."

"then why was he looking for you this morning." pj smirked.

"i don't know." i said, which was mostly truthful.

"sure."

the bell rang again and i headed of to my next class which went by in a whir along with history, linguistics, and math.

the lunch bell sounded and everyone quickly bolted off to the cafeteria. i went back to my locker and put my things away. there was no point in rushing like everyone else. it's not like anything they served was good anyways, let alone deserved to be called food.

i walked to the lunch room gingerly and turned to the vending machines. there was no way i would eat the school lunch. i put in a five pound note and got a pre wrapped sandwich and a ribena then patiently waited for my change to fall out.

"dan!" pj waved to me from a table in the back. he was sitting with chris and louise. all the popular kids who usually ate with chris and pj were gone. they probably skipped because they were hung over from last nights party.

i waved back and went over to sit with them.

"aww dan not having the cafeteria's world famous brown meat slab, green mush, and potatoes? pj joked.

i shook my head and laughed.

"did you study for the history exam?" chris turned to louise. "i totally flunked it."

"that's not a surprise." she said smiling.

"since when do you care about your grades?" pj teased.

chris pushed him playfully. "never."

"what's going on?" a voice said from behind me. the voice sat down across from me next to louise.

"finally eating with us again phil?" chris joked.

"yeah." phil said setting his tray down. "all of you popular friends aren't here so i decided to come back."

pj smirked at me again and i kicked him from underneath the table. louise eyed us telling us to stop.

"did you get my note dan?" phil asked.

i looked over at pj who was now grinning like a dork. "yeah, thanks." i said trying to sound uninterested so pj would leave me alone. phil didn't get the hint either and kept talking.

"your hairs different today, er not that it looks bad it's just different."

"thanks for clarifying phil." i teased.

"it's his hobbit hair." chris piped in.

phil laughed and said, "so you guys going to come over tonight? my dads not going to be home."

phil was asking chris, pj, and louise so i put my head down took a bite of my sandwich. it's not like he cared about me, we'd just met yesterday.

"sure phil it sound fun." pj said. "chris?"

"yeah, sure."

"what about you louise."

"i can't, have to baby sit again." she said.

"oh, well what about you dan." phil said eagerly. "want to come."

"yeah dan come on." pj elbowed me.

"uh, yeah, i guess so."

"cool!" phil exclaimed. "well apart from you louise, sorry you can't come."

"it's fine. i'll be there in spirit." she stood up and went to empty her tray in the rubbish bin, chris and pj followed leaving me and phil alone together.

we had about three minutes of unbearable silence until i finally decided to break it. "so, why don't you like being with chris' other friends?"

"i don't know, it's hard to explain. i just don't fit in with them. they show me i can't everyday."

"i know exactly what you mean." i whispered quietly not looking at him.
