phil's pov
a little after dan texted me i hopped into please start and skidded down the empty street of my cookie cutter subdivision. dan didn't have a car so i had to pick him up and he also didn't tell me any of his plans so i guess today would be a mystery along with the rest of what was daniel howell.
as i pulled up to dan's driveway i noticed he was already outside, sitting on the aged wooden steps of his porch. when he saw me he stood up grabbing a black backpack that was in the grass next to his feet and eagerly jogged over to my car.
"hi." he beamed as he opened the door making please start groan in retort.
"hi." i said back without an ounce of creativity. almost instantly, i became distracted by his beautiful smile. there was a little dimple showing on his left cheek which made him look outstandingly adorable.
i stopped myself for a second, was i actually saying he was cute? i mean it's not like he wasn't but-
"phil," he asked. "you gonna go, we;ve been sitting here for almost a minute?"
"oh, um, yeah." i blushed and turning away from dan to start up the engine. he laughed and reached over to turn on please start's outdated radio as though we were old friends who had always known one another, i smiled at the thought and drove while we sat in silence despite the soft music. i turned to look at him for a second, as he stared out the window contemplatingly watching the colors of the houses blur past as we accelerated by.
"so, where you want to go" i blurted after a song ended.
"i don't know." he shrugged still facing the window.
"what do you mean you don't know, you're the one who wanted to do stuff."
"i figured you'd have something you want to do."
"that isn't how it works, you called me!"
"well i guess you could just drive down town and see what's happening." dan said adjusting his hair.
"okay." that's how our conversations always went, short and pointless having no meaning at all. i don't know why but when i talked to him i feel nervous like he'll be quick to judge me and think that i'm an idiot and hate me if i were to make a mistake... if that makes any sense at all.
i listened to him though, and took a right turn that would eventually branch off into the center of on where all the shops were and generally anything interesting cloud lake could offer was.
"so why's it called cloud lake?" dan asked suddenly, regarding the town.
"how would i know, i wasn't the one to name it."i teased. dan slumped back down into his car seat and i felt kind of bad so i told him the actual reason. he of course, seemed bored with my answer but i didn't care because it was his fault for asking.
"so if you go behind the old laundromat at the beginning of town near the big welcome sign-"
"you mean the broken sign we drove past when we saw the stars that one night?" dan interrupted smiling.
"yeah and it says welcome in it in big black letters therefore it is a welcome sign dan keep up, anyways," i continued. " if you go behind the laundromat there is a lake but it's really small and the waters kinda white probably from pollution or chemicals or something that spilled into the water and so they called the town cloud lake."
"so that's it?" he doubted, a look of disgust on his face.
"basically."
"cool."
cool. cool? that's all i get, the first time i actually try to talk to him for more than half a minute and all i get is cool. i swear i'm not ever going to get anywhere with this boy.
