The sky was black and the sun had set for the last time this year. I stared out the window of the passenger seat as the street lamps shined down the horrible light shade of cheaper bulbs. They had once glowed a nice orange tint but now just shone a bland pale grey, making the grass look white.
Familiar streets, woods, parks and homes came into view as we neared home. The flight was long, boring and tiring. I layed my head against the window and rested my eyes.
I was shook by Will about ten minutes later, informing me we were home. I stepped out of the car into heavy falling snow in -7°c and walked inside.
My uncles house was warm and smelt of vanilla candles, which made up majority of the light sources. The flames danced and with them the shadows moved on walls. The air was sweet and it felt as though you were in trance. Soft songs came from the radio in the corner that added beautiful background music.
"Uncle Liam!" I yelled to him. He came out of their room and looked over the banister to see me. He smiled fondly at myself before running to the stairs. He hugged me, spinning me around the room.
"Hey Lil, how was Canada?" He asked, gently placing me back on the floor.
"It was good. Did you guys have a good Christmas?"
"Yep." He replied happily despite there being about 3 foot of snow that had to be shoveled on Christmas Day.
We all sat on the sofa in the living room. The Christmas tree was still up and twinkling (hehe 😏). There was fairy lights hanging from the walls. I sat snuggled in the corner of the sofa in a big wooly jumper and jeans, hugging a cushion. I felt like a cheerful little 5 year old who's getting to stay up late.
The doorbell rang about 25 minutes later and I practically trampled over the adults who were all writing tweets and posting Instagram pictures. I hopped over the back of the sofa and yanked on the old door handle to open it.
Jordan and his parents were right on time. They looked like a trio all in jackets, mittens and scarfs.
"Hey everyone, come on in!"
"Thank you." His parents said. They all shuffled inside out of the cold. They seemed extremely thankful to no longer be in the cold. The adults all sat down on the sofas to chat while me and Jordan placed their soaked winter wear in the cupboard and then went to make the parents tea.
"So Princess, how was Canada?" He asked, smirking at me from an island counter seat while I put the kettle on. I felt like I should go along with this little charade.
"Oh my Sir Jordan I couldn't stop thinking about you the whole time I was there!" I said in the most poshest English accent I could muster. I curtsied and continued,"I am so privileged to once again be in your presence Sir Jordan."
"Oh your majesty the privilege is mine!" He said hopping down from the chair. He knelt down on one knee and grabbed my hands which I was not expecting."Princess, I, as your Knight, must serve you. Your every wish, is my command!" He said.
"Well first let go of my hands and dig out the food. Everything will be in the cupboard under the microwave."
"As you wish." He said smiling, still bowing as he backed away. He ended up backing up into the bin and falling over it.
We laughed while I filled 4 mugs with tea and placed them on a tray along with the milk and sugar. We got bowls and put each of the snacks in, still leaving a bit incase we ran out.
We both walked out into the living room and put everything out. The adults thanked us and continued to talk.
"So Mr Graser, how was the flight back?" Mr Bayani asked. (Yes, I just wrote that 😋)
"It was a little bumpy but they had Christmas music on and everyone was still in a cheerful spirit." Dad replied.
We listened for a bit but it became obvious they weren't going to talk to us kids so we went and got lemonade and sat around on the floor chatting and making jokes.
We did that until it was about ten minutes until new years. We sent out last texts. I sent out my last tweet of the year. We sent our last Snapchats before refilling the glasses, turning on the news and standing up for the last moments of year.
"I wasn't sure it would be appropriate to say but you know you guys we sat beneath the mistletoe for the last hour or so?" Will said to us.
Me and Jordan looked at each other and then to where we were sat. And he wasn't lying. We smiled at one another and then I turned to Will and said,"Maybe next year."
The countdown began and once it was new year everyone hugged and cheered. We heard fireworks in the distance and cheering from other homes.
The adults sat down and continued to talk. How boring.
"Come on, we can go make pizza and eat the rest of the sweets!" I said.
We shoved a pizza in the oven and ate everything.
"Without joking this time, I really did miss you..." He said while we ate.
"Get over yourself Mr romance, what are you gonna do next? Pick me up bridal style, and kiss me under that stupid mistletoe?" I retorted smirking.
"So you didn't actually miss me?" He asked.
"Maybe." I replied.
I placed the plates by the sink and cleared the baking tray away. I turned around and Jordan was standing right behind me. He pulled me into a hug and I hugged him back. After a few moments we pulled back but still holding each other.
"I think someone did miss me!" He said cheekily. I giggled at him.
"Happy new year Ditzy."
"Happy new year Derpy." He replied.
