AFTERMATH

“‘You know,’" Clary said, ‘most psychologists agree that hostility is really just sublimated sexual attraction.’”

― Cassandra Clare, City of Bones

I run to Kaleb who is shaking his hand and flinching in pain. I grab his hand and he takes a sharp breath in. "Does that hurt?" I ask him, looking from his hand to his face.

"Yeah." He replies, shaking it again, the pain obvious in his grimace.

"Good! Kaleb what the hell?" I yell, smacking his arm, making him jerk back in pain.

"Natalia! What was I supposed to do? Crazy Cam was coming at me with the killing look in his eyes!" He screams at me as a crowd begins to form around us.

"Whatever Kaleb, just help me get him out of here." I sigh, moving over to Cam's limp body.

"No, I'm not helping him, he's a pathetic piece of shit." Kaleb spits in Cam's direction, still holding his hand.

"Stop!" I yell, anger rolling through my veins cutting Kaleb off, who stares at me in shock. "I understand you don't like him but man up and take responsibility for your actions!" I shout, pointing to Cam.

"No." Kaleb growls, crossing his arms letting his injured one hang limp against the other. I take a deep breath in, trying my hardest not to snap at him and straighten up, all of a sudden aware of how many people are gathered around us.

"Fine," I sneer through clenched teeth. "Marissa help me get him out to the car please." Marissa moves from where she's standing and grabs Cam's legs warily while I pull his upper body up into my arms. I look back to Kaleb who's still leaning against the wall holding his hand and watching Marissa and I lift Cam's body, and I roll my eyes.

"We'll talk tomorrow." I say to him and then make my way backwards out of the front door all the way back to Cam's car.

"Thanks Marissa, you can go back now." I tell her as we reach his car and Marissa nods and then looks back at Cam who still hasn't stirred. "I'll be okay." I answer her silent question, shutting the back seat door and getting in the drivers seat.

"Okay, I guess I'll see you on Tuesday?" She asks, backing up out of my way as I start the car. I nod at her and wave goodbye before pulling out of the parking space and heading back to Cam's house. I crank a window open as I drive hoping that the air will wake him up but I still get no response.

Pulling into the driveway I shut the car off and come around to the back door and open it. I stand there for a minute assessing how I'm going to do this until I finally just grab his shoulders and pull him out of the car.

It' a struggle, but I am able to get him inside. I pull him through the front door and drop him on the couch and sigh with relief as I sink down next to him.

I stand from the couch, feeling my exhaustion, and head upstairs to change into my pajama bottoms. As I reach Cam's room I hear a noise downstairs and I turn and run down the stairs stopping at the last step and standing there, surveying the room. Cam is no longer on the couch and I freeze.

"Cam?" I shout through the quiet house and it echos back to me. "Cam!" I shout louder and this time I hear his car start outside so I run out the front door to find him in the drivers seat.
