-Emmaline's Point of View-

. . .

I sat on the dry pier and looked out at the glistening lake, with a sigh I was saying my silent goodbyes to not just the lake but also the summer.

In two weeks school would start back up, I did allow myself to smile at the prospect of this year.

"Hey pretty lady, what's makin you smile so big?"

I rolled my eyes before I looked up at Leander, I put my hand on my brow to shield my eyes from the sun. "What's it to ya?"

He smirked, "I don't know, guess I'm just hoping that smiled for me or better yet, because of me." He flirted.

I laughed a humorless laugh, Leander and I have been friends since kindergarten, we did try dating once but things got bad quickly. Now we pretend to be friends to ease the tension of the past.

"If you must know, I was thinking about school."

"School?" He asked, "you're seriously thinking about that on a day like this?" He gestured toward the gloriously sunny sky.

I shook my head, I never could understand how he seemed to act as if nothing ever happened between us, I on the other hand regret ever agreeing to date him.

"We're gonna be seniors this year."

At this point Leander's best friend Duke swam up with his girlfriend Scarlett. "Woo Senior year baby!"

This made me smile.

Senior year, the legendary "greatest year of our lives" but for me All it made me think of is the fact that after this comes the entire world.

"I can't wait for football games, senior prank, prom..."Scarlett rambled.

I had to agree, since I am in fact the captain of the cheerleading squad.

"Yeah football's gonna be something else this year." Leander remarked, I could sense the tension in his words.

Leander is our schools quarterback, and here in Texas, when your school is undefeated things can get hectic. You can go from the most loved person in town to the most hated in a matter of a heartbeat.

So Leander had every right to be nervous about the upcoming season.

I laid back against the pier and pouted, "I'm not ready to leave yet."

"Well we still have a couple of hours before sundown, let's make the most of it before we have to head back."

Leander and I hoped back in the lake with the cute couple and just lost track of time. Before we knew it we were all in dry clothes, packing our bags back up and hitting the highway on our way back to town.

"Wouldn't it be amazing if something new happened while we were away." I commented as I rolled the window down.

Leander and I live in a very small town, one where everyone knows everyone. But don't get me wrong it's not one of those one horse podunk towns with dirt roads. Quite the opposite, our town is very upscale and every family there is pretty well off. But needless to say, nothing exciting ever happens.

The last thing that happened in our town was last year when we got a Starbucks and the high school got an overhaul.

We drove on, singing along to our favorite songs.

As we pulled up to our town I said a final silent goodbye to the beautiful sun before we were virtually shroud in darkness.

Now I know what your thinking, you live in Texas, land of Sunshine and heat. Well not quite, while it is always humid, our town consists of a lot (and I mean a lot) of trees. That's where our town's name comes from: Treehaven.
